Stage 6 - January 17: La Fría-Mérida, 156.3 km

Defending champion attacks to win stage 6

Venezuelan Noél Vásquez, and defending champion of the Vuelta al Táchira, soloed away from a breakaway 15 kilometres away from the finish line. He placed a margin of nearly two minutes between him and the breakaway led by Colombian Víctor Becerra (Triple Gordo) and the local rider Edgar Ortega (Gobierno de Tachira-IDT). Race leader Broutt followed a few seconds later together with Colombians Alvaro Lozano (Alcaldía de Cabimas) and Federico Muñoz (Triple Gordo), two favorites to the title.

110 kms into the 156 km race the mountains welcomed the peloton where the climbers broke away into the 1,550 meter climb to the finish line. It was defending champ Vásquez, though, who gave notice of his intentions and capabilities by his solitary finish at the finish line
