Stage 1 - January 12: Barinas Circuit Race, 118.4 km

Russian takes stage 1

180 cyclists from 9 nations began the 36th Vuelta a Tachira, one of Venezuela's most prestigious cycling events. The 13 stage event will run a course of 1,747.5 kms. 70 percent of the course is over the flat with the last 30 percent giving the edge to the climbers.

The first stage, a circuit race in Barinas, was won by Russian Pavel Broutt who with local Pastor Linares managed a breakaway in the final laps. Their lead increased to 1:15 over the peloton who did not show great intentions of bridging the gap. Broutt edged Linares in the final sprint. The winners averaged 43.507 kms over the 118 kms, finishing the 15 laps in 2:43:17. Tomorrow's stage is another circuit in Guanare of 151.5 kms.
