"Bring it on!" Series #1

"Bring it on!" Series #1

Alachua, Florida, January 27, 2001

The A grade race featured the first competitive appearance of the new Trek/VW southeast regional road team in the form of the young Cody Ward and US national track points race medalist Dan Larson. There were also the surprise entrants from South Florida's Jamis/Access Health stalwarts Robert Lee and John Cippolla. The time trial ace John Cippolla won several events in the close of 2000 and looked to extend this streak into 2001.

The predominantly flat and straightforward course would have seemed to predict a field sprint, but the windy conditions and aggressive riding overcame the day and the field finished in fragments. After having the stage set early on by some good work from Cody Ward, Dan Larson came in solo. He was followed by the Jacksonville sprinter James Sweeny who led in a group of three riders shortly ahead of the main bunch. Cippolla's hot streak came to an end, but not without some powerful displays of strength mid-race.

The B graders were a bit more subdued in the course of their event and justly received their field sprint. In the end it just took a bit of guts and a good turn of speed to come away the victor over the 30 rider main bunch. University of Florida rider Erik DeKold proved to have both and cleared the line with a comfortable 5 bike length sprint win.
