Carnegie Caulfield CC Criterium

Waverley Park, Mulgrave, Vic, January 16, 2001

A good field of 130 in total met on a cool evening to contest the Carnegie Caulfield club’s crit at Waverley Park. Using 2.2km of car park roads, including a stiff little pinch, the racing continues despite doubt about the future of the venue.

A grade experienced frequent, savage, attacks with small groups and singles escaping briefly only to be reabsorbed in short order. The finale saw Peter Herrewyn (G&D Cycles) kick away to register a solid win ahead of Fitzroy’s Brendan Rowbotham who lead in Johnny Clarke (Look) and wily Warragul vet Geoff Thompson (Bikeland).

Rohan McLellan got the judges’ nod in an extremely tight finish with Colin Morris. Russell Wallace and Grant Mathews made up the placings. Again, a race of an attacking nature that ended in a sprint. The nations top women were back in the action with Anna Milward and Liz Tadich active throughout. Back for her third Summer with Carnegie, Swiss Olympian and ’99 Swiss Road Champ Priska Doppman enjoyed the first race of her year among the wheels. Katie Mactier, sidelined with injuries sustained in the Nationals last Sunday, was swamped with well-wishers.

David Mephett, remember the name, attacked C grade’s 37 starters in the first lap and was never regained. In fact he came within 50 metres of lapping the bunch on a difficult circuit in breezy conditions. Not only that, he then ran 40 minutes before returning to pick up his winnings! Off to B grade for ever-more. Daniel Dilger and Steve Jeans made valiant individual efforts to diminish the gap to no avail, while Paul Groves was happy to take his first place in C grade.

D grade went about their business most efficiently, delivering the race to the veteran clique with Tony Gill winning the dash from Simon Perryman in another very tight finish. Minor places to Eric Rudd and Ray Smith.

The little’uns in E grade found the going tough, especially the wind, but battled on gamely. Victory to Sean Burke from Dale Reith, Louise Burke and Erin Downing.
