After several attempts, Estonian Jaan Kirsipuu (Ag2r) has finally won his first race for 2001. The sprinter has been on the podium for most of the stages in the tour, but had yet to convert one of them into a win. This afternoon he beat Jimmy Casper (FdJ) and Tristan Hoffman (CSC) as the race sped into Carcassonne. The race is still being led by Davide Rebellin (Liquigas) after Ivan Basso's unfortunate fall in the morning stage. The 82 kilometre stage from Beziers to Carcassonne was marked by a strong headwind, and the peloton were nearly 30 minutes behind schedule coming into Carcassonne. There were no serious attacks, and a bunch sprint was the result. Tomorrow's final stage of the Tour Méditerranéen is 134 kilometres from Miramas to Marseille, and is considered to be another sprinter's stage. Barring accidents, Davide Rebellin should be able to win his first race of the season.
