The first and arguably the hardest stage of the Tour Méditerranéen
has been won by up and coming Italian cyclist Ivan Basso, who gave his
Fassa Bortolo team a hopeful taste of things to come. Basso won the
stage that finished at the top of Mt Faron, beating compatriot and 'eternal
second' Davide Rebellin (Liquigas). In third place was Cofidis' David
Moncoutié, followed by Laurent Brochard (Jean Delatour) and Francisco
Mancebo (iBanesto.com).
The 140 kilometre stage between Antibes and Mont Faron (Toulon) saw
184 riders start from 23 teams. Riders were quick to attack, with Hungarian
Laszio Bodrogi (Mapei) reaching the Col d'Esterel (315 m) with a 5'20
advantage on the bunch. By kilometre 90 (Col d'Gratteloup) Bodrogi still
had 5 minutes before the peloton reacted at last. He was joined in Toulon,
at the foot of Mt Faron (544 m), by Laurent Brochard before being dropped
and caught by Basso, Rebellin and Moncoutié.
Brochard tried his luck again, but the other three were stronger at
the summit, putting 19 seconds into the Jean Delatour rider. Given that
he has a strong team, Basso is well placed to hold his position at the
head of the race over the next four days. Challenges will come from
all quarters despite the relative flatness of the terrain.
