Ben Litchfield from team University of QLD won the final race and finished 2nd overall, while Leon Vogels (Team Harding European/G.E.T.) secured 3rd place overall by placing 3rd in the final race. The Astra/Merida team dominated the finish of race 1 but it was Harding European who came back in race 2 to gain the most points on the day. In the Teams competition there was some great riding from all the teams competing, especially from Astra/Merida and Harding European/G.E.T. who both fought hard for every point. Astra/Merida took out the La Dolce Vita Cup teams competition from Harding European/G.E.T., however their lead was reduced to 70 points by the end of Sunday's race. With 15 points allocated for each sprint, the overall Teams result could have hinged on who had the best sprinters in their teams. Race one saw Marty Pearce of Harding European/G.E.T. win 3 of 5 sprints while Cameron Hughs of Astra/ Merida winning the remaining 2 sprints. Race two had Craig Saunders and Shem Gutherie (Astra/Merida) win 3 of 6 sprints, Troy Fidler (Harding European/G.E.T.) win 1, Ben Lintchfield (University of QLD) and Cameron Jennings shared the remaining 2 sprints. All teams are now looking forward to the rest of the racing season. A magic day weather wise, and the riders couldn't help but be inspired, so it was attacking racing, almost from start to finish. The exception was A Grade who dawdled off the line and were caught by B Grade within 10 minutes. When it soon became apparent that the two grades weren't going to separate quickly the decision was made to turn A Grade at the 900 metre turn at the top of the hill, thus creating an instant half lap gap. A Grade then came to life, and it was not long before Nick Gates and "Crackles" Cahill were off the front and building a sizeable lead. By the 40 minute mark the question was "Can they lap the field?", something that Robbie McEwen and Jans Koerts have done individually on this circuit, but it is a tough ask. With five minutes to go they made contact, went straight past the remnants of the bunch, and at the finish it was Gates who had the superior speed. 47 year old Paul Wild has won Australian Veterans Championships and World Firefighters Championships, and he continues to be one of the strongest Masters riders on the Coast. On Sunday he was one of the most aggressive in B Grade, attacking almost constantly until he finally got away in the last 15 minutes with Dave Costanzo, another rider who would rather be up front working than sitting in the bunch waiting for the sprint. And Costanzo can sprint, as he showed again today, with Wild second and the bunch sprint taken out by Andrew Blackmore, who is close to getting a promotion to A Grade in the space of only two weeks. C Grade was won by Paul Hill from Anthony Johnston, while 13 year old Spencer Stacey showed the D Grade field that he can win either on the flat at Burleigh or on the hills at Nerang. A rider with a big future!
