Tasmanian State Madison Cycling ChampionshipLaunceston Silverdome, February 22, 2001 By Rod Morris Pre-race favourites Nathan Clarke and Gareth Atkins did not let their army of supporters down in the Tasmanian State Madison Championship, which was held at the Launceston Silverdome on Thursday night. The Madison was held over 50 km - or 175 laps of the 285 m Silverdome circuit. Clarke and Atkins, two of very few Tasmanian scratchmen shaped as the riders to beat and rode accordingly. The pair won four of the eight sprints on offer, finished second in the other four and more importantly did not lose a lap to their 10 opposing teams. Clarke and Atkins let the field know they meant business from the opening sprint, winning from Caleb Manion and Daniel Cutting, while Cameron McCormack and Luc Gilmore snatched the third points. That trio of teams took one, two and three in the final Madison placings, while the Steve Price-Steve Aitken and Matthew Conn-Mark Matthews combinations were the only other teams to win intermediate sprints. The win was the perfect hit out for Clarke and Atkins, who will contest the lucrative Australian Madison and Bendigo Madison in Victoria in March. In the A grade race the pressure was mounting with only two points separating the two top teams, Rideshop and Lonsdale. At five minutes gone Mick Tolhurst, Trevor Rix and Brenden Savage jumped clear and they were joined a lap later by Simon Camroux and David Newton. Another lap later big Georgie Bunt was in no mans land trying to get across, with big Bob McLachlan rapidly closing. Macca closed the gap and went straight past and latched on to the front group. By 11 minutes covered the front group of six had a 12 second gap over Bunt, who had been joined by John Forrest and Denis Mungoven. The trio amalgamated with the front group a short while later making the lead group nine strong. By 18 minutes the group led by the length of the main straight a gap of 17 seconds. With three laps to go Tohurst attempted to go clear, without success, before Savage and Rix tried their luck. The main field was rapidly closing while the front bunch played cat and mouse. The main bunch ultimately latched on with half a lap remaining, but the front nine were strung and no-one from the main field managed to move up. Mungoven led out of the final corner, only to be overpowered by the forces of Newton, with McLachlan throwing his bike at the line to create a dead heat for second. In the B grade Simon Claringbold stayed clear of the pack for most of the race, only to be caught with one lap to go. In the gallop it was Chris Marassovich who confirmed his desire for A grade by winning his second for the season, ahead of John Gillian and John Thorn. In the C grade, Rob Aughey who had obviously been escaping the handicappers eye (six top fives incl two wins), had his second win ahead of Chris Short (also accumulating plenty of top fives and also securing a berth in B grade) and Terry Danaher. The result was a 30 strong A grade field boosted again by the visiting Koreans (who take their pre-race preparation very seriously) and the UK contingent of Huw Pritchard and co. As is sometimes the case, size doesn't always count and a much more efficient B grade were able to hold their own in the early laps. However, they threw the handicap racing strategy out the window after 7 laps when Mathew Warner-Smith (new to Heffron), along with Andy Foggin and St George duo of Dr Bob Hampshire and John Sunde set off to make the race their own. After collecting sprint points at 7, 5 and 3 laps to go the four man group rounded up C grade inside the last 3 laps. At this stage, A grade had also broken up, with six riders going clear and making inroads on the remnants of the B and C grade fields. However, A grade could not quite get the four escaped B graders for the overall honours, and Mathew Warner-Smith took the win from John Sunde, Bob Hampshire and Andrew Foggin. Laurence Vignes claimed 5th place to pick up an extra point in the Series pointscore.
