The race was fast and furious with Olympians Graeme Brown (Australia) and Jens Mouris (Netherlands) winning the Championship in the dying stages of the event by taking a lap. Former Junior World Champion Jeff Hopkins, teamed with Australian Representative Steve Woolridge led the race right up to the second-last sprint when Brown and Mouris made the decisive attack which culminated in the winning break and taking a lap on the field. Current Junior World Champion Mark Renshaw and former Junior World Champion Keiran Cameron rode a gallant race to finish third just one point behind Hopkins/Woolridge. Other top performances came from the Victorian pairing of Ashley Harding and David Maltby who used the event as preparation for the Bendigo Madison, and top junior riders Chris Sutton and Matt Farmer who finished a creditable sixth in their first Open Madison. The high standard of racing augers well for the up-coming NSW State Championships to be held during March and the premiere event on the Sydney Track Calendar - The Clarence St Cyclery Cup Meet scheduled for 17 March 2001 at the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome. Hobart's Stephen Rossendell, Nook rider Belinda Goss and Burnie's Ben Fielding completed a grand slam of gold medal performances in their respective age group categories. The championships were broken into three sessions, starting with individual time trials last Friday night. Rossendell, Goss and Fielding each won their time trials, Flying 200m, Sprint and Pursuit, while Rossendell also won the Men's Under 19 Keirin title on Saturday afternoon. For the first time in many years Cycling Tasmania (formerly Tasmanian Cycling Federation) offered prizemoney for senior riders, but only four registered cyclists took up the offer. Nathan Hingston, Karl Menzies, Aaron Brown and Damon Griggs were the only senior riders who competed in any of the championships and it is highly likely CT will review its decision. Of the senior class riders who did compete, Griggs won the Flying 200m, Menzies the 1000m Time Trial and Sprint titles while Brown found success in the Keirin Championship. It was a worst-case scenario in the Womens' Open class with insufficient entries to stage any titles. Devonport's David Klyne won three titles in the Mens Under 17s, as did Kirby Piscioneri in the Womens Under 17s. First year Devonport cyclist Natasha Mapley, a product of the Tasmanian Institute of Sport's Talent Identification Programme, won her maiden State title in yesterday's 2000m Individual Pursuit. At the end of the championships, CT selectors announced this year's State track squad. Weather conditions were close to perfect at the Velodrome with a temperature in the high 20s and very little wind. Several of the Aces were competing at Melbourne's new indoor Vodafone Velodrome which made club competition more even, resulting in some very close finishes. A-grade was won by Ryan Kelly from Mal Sawford over three events. Sawford took out the scratch race from Leon Sims. Kelly edged out Sawford in the hotly contested elimination and having placed highly in the point score was able to take the A-grade honours overall. B-grade events consisted of a scratch race, motor pace, points race and a sprint. Consistency won the day for Rob Doyle but the surprise of the omnium was young Adam Rankin in third place overall. Spies have caught Adam out training on the road behind the motor bike. The Juniors raced over the same set of events as B-grade with pint-size Peter Johnstone out pacing his competitors by showing a great deal of determination in each event. Pete never gives up until the finish line passes beneath his wheels. Johnstone also took out the additional sprint event as did Mary Rogers in the women's sprint. Rodgers is showing great form this season and like young Peter Johnstone is a great fighter for that finish line. Even with several riders competing at the indoor velodrome, Carnegie/Caulfield attracted just under 40 riders for a very successful meeting. Racing starts at 2.00 pm Saturdays and 6.00 pm Thursdays through to the end of March. After this, the sprint rounds were held with all the favoured riders making it through to the next round. Rex Robinson easily won the B grade sprint rounds and Damian Harris easily won the A grade sprint. Heat 2 of the Coppi Rovelli trophy was run with the only lady in the field getting the money. Katrina Robinson won from Terry Douglas with scratch marker Damian Harris getting third place. There were a few complaints, but the racing showed that the handicappers are on the right track. Last week John Kane got A Grade off to a fast start, and this week he was in the action early again. First to attack after two laps were Rob Vetisch and Ken Draper, but they were soon joined by Kane. Gradually they built a lead of 30 seconds which they held comfortably for the next 30 minutes, but then the bunch got serious with Draper and Vetisch the first to be caught, before Kane was reeled in at 50 minutes. Nick Gates was the next to have a go, followed by that man Kane, but the bunch was in no mood to give them any leeway and they were soon caught. For the second week in a row Troy Stacey and Jeff Harris took the quinella, Nick Gates was third and Jamie Seip repeated his fourth place from last week. The revamped B Grade got off to a fast start, with a five man break in the first lap including two promising first year Under 17's in Peter Spencer and Ben Mockridge. By ten minutes the break had grown to 10, and the bunch never saw them again. It was no surprise that the first four home were all former A Graders, with Andrew Blackmore the fastest of them all. C Grade was taken out by Karl Rameau, D Grade by Rob Payne, and the first E Grade race for some time was won by Rob Rota.
