Despite the generous handicap for B and C grades, neither grade seemed to make any impression on A grade who were setting a blistering pace in their chase. The wind was playing havoc even with A grade who suffered a fall and also lost half their numbers to the speed of the race, although the visiting Korean track team seemed to be enjoying the challenge. It was a relatively small 'official' group of A grade riders (Dangerfield, Campbell, Rowney, Vignes, Curro and Sung Tho-Ho) who caught B grade with 5 to go and almost immediately Stewart Campbell showed his continued good form by setting off on his own to catch C grade, aided by Korean rider Sung Tho-Ho and some less than subtle blocking from team mates Stuart Dangerfield and Paul Rowney. Campbell and Tho-Ho had little trouble in catching C grade on the last lap, with C graders then claiming the remaining top 5 places. Billions of electrons were saved (not to mention valuable bandwidth) when John Sunde did not win B grade. Instead, it was Dr Bob Hampshire, showing fine sprinting form who came away with the win, slaughtering countless more bytes in the process. An impressive field of 52 junior riders faced the starter at Exeter for a unique all-points system carnival. Riders were provided with a choice of six different events, 1000 m handicap, elimination, derby, 2000 m handicap, one-lap time trial and scratch race. Each race carried scaled points and at the end of all racing, cyclists with the highest aggregate of points were awarded prizemoney and trophies. In the Under 19s, recently crowned Launceston Wheel winner Abram Manion showed he is still in good touch, amassing 33 points out of a possible 36. His total was the highest of the day and included three wins and three second placings. The Under 17 age group saw Devonport rider David Klyne win by three points ahead of Matthew Goss, although the margin would have been greater had Klyne not been disqualified in the lightning handicap for failing to wear his saddlecloth number. Ben Fielding survived a tense countback to win the Junior Two (Under 15) category. Devonport's John Rayner equalled Burnie's Fielding on points, but the age group was decided courtesy of one win and two seconds for Fielding against one win and one second for Rayner. Strong Devonport junior Alex Holden was a clear winner in the Junior Three (Under 13). Brother/sister act, Adam and Natasha Mapley-Morris recorded wins in their respective Exeter Wheelraces in two of the many impressive rides of the day. Cycling Tasmania and West Tamar Cycling Club officials were delighted with the response from junior riders. The Tasmanian Track Championships will be held at the Launceston SIlverdome from February 16-18. One hundred and ten starters this week, making it the largest field for some time. John Kane made sure A Grade got off to a fast start when he attacked in the first lap and was away by himself for 15 minutes. Once he was caught, the pace remained high, preventing any substantial breaks from forming, and in the charge to the line it was Troy Stacey who was too fast for Jeff Harris and NSW visitor David Harrigan. Under 17 riders Brad Payne and Peter Spencer took out B and C Grades respectively, while first year Under 15 Spencer Stacey made it a family double by winning D Grade. Three young riders with bright futures. CATS riders were delighted to hear the news that fellow club member Robbie McEwen has continued his sensational New Year form by taking his first European win of the season, over Erik Zabel on the last day of the Mallorca Challenge. The first of many we hope! The 50km points race format attracted a class field of 29 riders competing for over $1000 prize money. Warren Knevitt and former European Professional and local resident Doug Garley lead the Club's charge, along with up and coming Juniors Michael Gill and Johnny Clarke. Olympian Brett Lancaster, Bendigo's 1994 Austral winner Ashley Harding, former Melbourne Cup on Wheels winner Barry Woods and recent US Pro team Net Zero signing Hilton Clarke Jnr were among the other leading contenders. Two days of oppressive heat promised a gruelling race, and the 50 lap B Grade support race indeed proved a race of attrition, eventually taken out by Geordan Murray with a late breakaway to finish ahead of Hayden Meade, Paralympian tandem pilot Russell Wolfe and Junior Simon Clarke. A few drops of rain as the feature event got underway looked ominous, but the rain held off allowing the 133 lap race to continue as planned. Former road Olympian Robert Crowe fell soon after the first sprint, but was able to rejoin the field despite bleeding from the hip, knee and elbow. Hilton Clarke lead the race in the early stages, positioning himself well to figure in the first few sprints. As expected, solo attacks came thick and fast, the first from Garley, but none were significant until Metropolitan Pursuit Champion Chris Carr held off the bunch long enough to claim the special $30 sprint prize at 70 laps to go. As Carr was captured, a 3 man break leapt away, featuring race leader Hilton Clarke, Bernie O'Dea of Bendigo and Brett Lancaster. Lancaster was unable to maintain the pace, however, and the remaining pair worked well to establish a half lap lead. Another Bendigo rider, Ray Turner set off in a solo chase, and looked to have failed, before a quick wheel change after a puncture, and a second wind saw him join the leading pair. The trio lapped the 16 riders remaining in the race with just over 30 laps to go, to earn a $50 prize donated by local cycling star of yesteryear Bill Dove. In the battle for fourth place, junior South Australian Glen Matulich was the early leader, before ex South African and current Carnegie rider Jonty Goldin's lighting speed saw him win sprints almost at will, including the final $30 special prize sprint. At the finish, Clarke ran out comfortable winner, from O'Dea on a countback from Turner. Fourth at 1 lap was Goldin from Matulich, Hilton's younger brother Jonny Clarke (who rode in the host Club's colours), Roberto Salvadeo and Paul Kenny. Rex sprinted to victory from Rod (Rocket) Curle, while third place went to Katrina Robinson. Fastest time went to Darren Murphy - also with a 2 minute improvement on his best time for the course.
