Championships Canberra CC Criterium and Time Trial ChampionshipsThe Causeway, Kingston ACT, February 7, 2001 Baden Burke takes the flag By Mark Carter The cloudy morning gave way to a superbly sunny afternoon of 28 degrees and only a slight breeze, making the 2001 CCC Criterium Championships one to remember, with a club record of 144 participants and various TV film crews an reaffirming the popularity the series has attained. Baden Burke added to his tally last night, making it three wins this season in a spectacular sprint finish, just clear of the in form Mungoven, from ex Olympian Rob McLachlan. Mungoven will take the title as Canberra Cycling Club Champion, as Burke is signed to the Parramatta Cycling Club. The early break came from Stu Bardsley and Daniel Franze and after three laps held a five second lead over the main field. They were brought back into the fold a short while later, before Tim Buchanan attacked going through the start finish line as the first sprint lap was called. Buchanan went on to take the prime comfortably by 20m, at eight minutes covered. Big Al Sieper had an unfortunate fall at the 12 minute mark on the notorious turn three, meanwhile, Buchanan and the HUGE Georgie Bunt were clear from the main pack. At 18 minutes covered Mungoven ran out of room on the back straight and hopped the gutter and attacked down the pavement, clearing away with Brendan Savage, and Buchanan. The move was relatively short lived, before Danny Hennessy attacked and by the 22 minute mark had a 9 second gap on the field being led by Mick Tolhurst. Hennessy was reeled in and Steve Blackburn countered with a short gap to the two initial protagonists of the day in Bardsley and Franze. By three laps to go (after 30 minutes of racing) the trio had amassed a lead of 11 seconds, the largest of the race. Chris Eichler of Port Fairy, rode a sacrificial lap as he single handedly towed the peloton back up to neutralise the break. On the bell lap it was Lindsay Burke who had gapped the field in a bold final attempt. As the sprinters appeared around the final turn to line up for the final 250m dash it was a wall of four spread across the road. In a class final dash Baden Burke took the win by half a length from Mungoven with Barcelona Olympian Rob McLachlan (still riding the seven speed down tube shifter De Rosa) who claimed thrid. In the B grade race, a hectic field of nearly 50 riders took to the start, the largest field ever assembled for a single grade. The night saw two crashes, including one on the final lap, as inexperienced riders tested their inability to Al Dente perfection. The race stayed together for the most and was destined for a bunch finish in a generally non aggressive race. After the crash on the second last lap, many were forced to chase to rejoin, but it was purely academic, as the split occurred 10 back and the sprinters were already lining up. In the gallop it was a scandal as a non entered rider took the victory from Simon Gay of Illawarra, with Jeff Dau the first CCC rider home in the CCC B Grade Criterium Championships. The first ever all womens criterium saw a great field of 23 take to the start line, including five riders with international experience. The race remained intact fo the opening two and a half laps, before Tracey Gaudry started to lift the pace, forcing some of the less experienced riders out the back. The major move of the day came from Mary Grigson as she attacked mid way through the race and raced away to 100m gap over the field. Grigson held the gap for three laps going to a maximum advantage of 120 meters. A front group of nine had established from the 23 starters which featured Gaudry, Grigson, Wright, Rutherford, Williams, Woods, Hickey, Moore and Rose. The nine remained together until the end, when Tracey Gaudry led out of the final turn to hold out from a fast finishing Wright, with West Australian Rutherford in third. In the C grade race Alex bird slipped through the registration/handicapping desk to front up in C grade again, and ended up sneaking the victory from Brendan Barnes with Robert Langridge coming home third. Australia Day track carnival on Tuesday evening, with local stars Ty
Winduss and Natasha Mapley gaining the major spoils. 14-year-old Ty
Winduss is the son of former Burnie Wheelrace winner, Vern Winduss,
while Natasha Mapley is in her first year of racing after being selected
in the Tasmanian Institute of Sport's Talent Identification Programme.
A week prior, Jarrod Burr was a clear winner of the Open category Australia Day Wheelrace, after the initial programme was washed out on January 26. The MVDCC also hosted four Tasmanian State titles on Tuesday, with David Klyne (Under 17 boys), Kirby Piscioneri (Under 17 girls), Ben Fielding (Under 15 boys) and Ebony Manion (Under 15 girls) all winning their respective age group categories. The remainder of the Tasmanian Track Championships will be held at the Launceston Silverdome from February 16-18. With Paul Rowney, Stuart Dangerfield, Stuart Campbell and Anthony Spurgeon making up the small A grade group, there was more than enough power and speed in A grade to ensure the B and C grade groups were rounded up well within the 15 laps. B grade were caught with 5 laps to go and with a strong Southerly blowing, it wasn't long before the stronger A grade riders were able to ride away with the race. They cuaght C grade on the last 2 laps before Stuart Dangerfield soloed away for one of his trademark victories. Laurence Vignes led the remaining bunch of 4 in, while John Sunde grabbed another B grade win and David Johanson rode an impressive last 2 laps to win C grade. Riders had to overcome 40 deg conditions during the afternoon. The evening session saw perfect conditions for racing in front of the huge crowd at the Leongatha Velodrome. Former World Junior Time Trial and Sprint Champ, Jeff Hopkins, was the star in a field of top class riders winning the Kelvin Johns Retravision 2000m Wheelrace off scratch and the Mitre 10 Keirin, defeating Gary Neiwand. Neiwand won the 800m KFC Backmarkers Wheelrace in a brilliant and powerful display, but in a shock result had to settle for third in the Sprint Derby behind Todd Wilksch and Mark French. Darren Young won a tough 20km Bridge Dairy Motor Paced in fine style. The night was capped off with a fantastic fireworks display, and earlier in the evening the crowd was thrilled by the display by the RAAF Roulettes. The sport loving Leongatha spectators gave the five Olympians present a great reception as they rode a lap of honour throwing mini basketballs into the crowd. Kelvin Johns Retravision 2000 metre Wheelrace NSW rider Jeff Hopkins rode a brilliant race to take out the rich Wheelrace and became only the 5th rider to win from scratch, joining greats like Stephen Pate, Gary Hammond and Brett Aitken. Hopkins lined up with Tassie riders Nathan Clarke and Darren Young on scratch with West Aust star Ryan Bayley on 10 and Todd Wilksch and Brett Lancaster on 20 metres. They made an impressive sight on the 400 m velodrome as they chased and caught the rest of the field with a lap to go. Hopkins went to the front at the bell and held off Nathan Clarke with West Australian Eddie Hollands a popular third. Capeview Mitre 10 Keirin Jeff Hopkins was on a roll. He went to the front early and stayed there. A desperate throw on the line by Neiwand was not enough. Todd Wilksch was third. Bridge Dairy Victorian 20km Motor Pace Title Tasmanian Darren Young put up a great effort to win the tough 20 km race from Bernie O'Dea and Nathan Clarke. Young who won the Leongatha Wheelrace in 1999 and was second in the Motor Pace last year came to Leongatha with the express purpose of winning this race . The pace was fast early with a high attrition rate. Young was always in control and was overjoyed with his win. Tandem The Sydney Paralympic Gold Medallists, Paul Clohessy and Darren Harry had to be content with second in the Sprint Derby with the Victorian team of Wolf and Murren too good for them on the day. Milo Scoop Shake Under 17 Victorian 8 km Motor Paced Title This was a high class field with several Aussie junior champs riding and top NSW sprinter Phillip Stokes making the trip to race. The race was very fast and a fall with two to go upset the tempo of the field. Castlemaine junior Sean Finning stormed home to win from Michael Ford with Patrick Shaw third. Shepparton rider Daniel Thorsen, who came down in the fall, is hoping to be able to race next weekend. Thorsen had earlier served notice that he was going to a real threat at the forthcoming State Titles. Gran Prix Cycles M15 Invitation Sprint Leongatha junior Gerard Murphy backed up his recent good form at the Country Champs by comfortably accounting for Mario Giramondo with clubmate Sam Bell third. Lyndelle Higginson dominated the women's events. She was pushed all the way by Rahna Demarte with visiting USA rider Tanya Lindenmuth also riding well. In the junior womens events Michelle Rowe (Leongatha), Brigid Farrell (Carnegie), Jessica Tanner (Shepparton), Tahlia Clayton (Ararat) and Hannah Bush (Shepparton) stood out. The front markers stole the show with Rod (rocket) Curle sprinting away from Arthur Crouch and Mick Roberts came in for third place with his fastest time over the distance. Fastest time went to Damian Harris, but with a 7 minute handicap it was going to be hard to reel in the front markers. Next week there will be racing at the Walkerston Club House starting at 8 am. The club's AGM will follow the racing.
