Stage 11a - February 23: Cardenas-Matanzas ITT, 40 km

Nürnberger pull out

The German Nürnberger team has withdrawn from the Vuelta a Cuba before the start of stage 11, protesting against a jury decision that went against them. The Germans were complaining that 20 Cubans exhibited unsportsmanlike behaviour during the mountainous tenth stage, and were not punished enough by the jury.

It was alleged that the 20 riders took it in turns to push race leader Pedro Pablo Pérez up one of the mountains, but he and one other team member were only penalised 30 seconds. Nürnberger director Bert Dietz felt that this was unfair and withdrew the whole squad. At the time, Nürnberger's Artur Babaitsev was lying in third place overall.
