Leoni gains another
Alessio's Endio Leoni has won his second stage of the Volta ao Algarve,
between Castro Marim and Albufeira (168 km). Leoni beat Spaniard Isaac
Galvez (Kelme) with Steven de Jongh (Rabobank) once again finishing
third. However, Galvez was later disqualified for an illegal maneuver
in the sprint. Leoni therefore increased his lead in the five day race,
with the extra time bonus.
There were plenty of attacks during the stage, with the first successful
one being from Pedro Martins (Gresco/Tavira) and Eduardo Gonzalez (Barbot/Torrié)
who spent several hours in front. However, Alessio were keen to keep
Leoni in the hunt, and were helped by Maia, ONCE, and Porta de Ravessa
to bring back the fugitives, who had gained over four minutes.
With 20 kilometres to go at Albufeira the two were caught and there
were immediate counter attacks. Jeromino Sanroma (Gresco) and Alberto
Martinez (Euskaltel) escaped but was caught with a few kilometres remaining.
The sprint was led out by Saulius Sarkauskas and Angel Edo, the latter
finishing in fifth place. Leoni was the fastest again however, beating
Galvez and de Jongh on the line, although Galvez was considered by the
judges to have deviated and was relegated.
Tomorrow's third stage will start in Faro and finish in Fóia, 170.5
kilometres.
