Rosebery Track Carnival

December 15, 2001

By Rod Morris

Young Tasmanian cyclist Abram Manion already has his name pencilled in as a rider of the future. His back-to-back performances on December 14-15 on the Tasmanian summer racing circuit only enhanced that growing speculation further.

Manion was impressive in riding second behind Leigh Bryan in Friday night's Ulverstone Criterium, but the very next day went one better when he won the $1000 Rosebery Wheelrace.

The talented 17-year-old from Exeter, won the 2000m handicap final from a mark of 100 m - that has since been revised to 80 by Tasmanian Cycling Federation Senior Track Handicapper Peter Coventry.

Manion is now in rare company as he presently holds two major Tasmanian wheelraces, Rosebery and Launceston, of which he will defend on December 28 at the International Silverdome.

Manion showed he meant business early in the day, by finishing a fast fourth to Dane Leedham in the Lightning Handicap, a race rarely suited to backmarkers.

He then went on to win his heat of the Rosebery Wheel before putting his name on the prestigious honourboard - a list that already includes riders of the ilk of Ron Grenda, Laurie Venn, Grant Atkins, John Abblitt and Gareth Atkins.

In fact it was Manion, Abblitt and Gareth Atkins who dominated racing in both the Elimination and A Grade Scratch, by filling the first three positions - although in reverse order.

The lowlight of the day's cycling was the fall by Ryan Johnson, Ron Crawford and Dane Leedham in the B Grade Scratch. All three riders escaped serious injury except for a few cuts and bruises.

In junior racing, Matthew's dominated the three wheelraces with Goss (Under 17), Bonham (Under 15) and Laskey (Under 13) all succesful.

Aside of the Devonport Trial Wheel (Dec. 18) and Launceston club racing (Dec. 20), the Rosebery Carnival was the last serious hit out for Tasmanian riders before the Basslink Tasmanian Carnival Series begins at Latrobe on Boxing Day.
