The web designer from Coffs Harbour, Nicole Malloy (22yo), won the 2001 Qld Diamond Exchange Women's Wheelrace, at the Geoff Reardon Velodrome at Nerang on the Gold Coast last Saturday evening.
Competing against a field of riders with international experience, Malloy rode a very smart race. Her main rival was scratchmarker Sara Carrigan, but with her handicap, Sara chased solo for too long and was unable to make contact with the bunch. Malloy, off a mark of 10 metres, soon caught and teamed with Sally Cowman (20m) and Kim McLeod (30m) who both then pulled in Tania Shipton (40m) and Claire Schneider (50m) to get down to the business end of the handicap race without the scratchmarker.
In the sprint to the line, Malloy took out the race and with it the $500 Diamond Pendant supplied by Qld Diamond Exchange of Southport, making it the richest women's track race in Queensland and possibly even Australia. Second was Kim McLeod with Sally Cowman third.
The Bruce Lynton BMW Men's Wheelrace was washed out and will be run at 3.30pm on Saturday 29th December at the Tom Limkin Wheelrace Carnival to be held at the same venue. Two private promoters are running this Track Carnival.
The Gold Coast Goldstars wishes everyone a safe and happy Festive season.
