London Cyclocross league Round 9 (Sussex League Round 4)

Brighton Excelsior Cyclo Club, December 9, 2001

Report

By Anthony Rogers

In this combined London League and Sussex League race Matt Spurgin led from the start in to win his second Sussex League event in a row, though he is not eligible for the trophy. He never looked troubled as he glided around a course which, though very popular with the riders, made many struggle.

Matt was followed home at 2 minutes by Chris McNamara of the VC Etoile with Stuart Fritter Wigmore CC a further 50 seconds behind. Andy Seltzer came in in 4th place with Carl McDonagh first Vet behind in 5th.

The challenge for the Sussex league is tight with a Sussex first place for Andy Seltzer in the next [and final] round leaving him in a position to draw for first place with Jon Sharpe of Cycleweb. This is a tough challenge for Andy but will add excitement to the last race in the series of the Sussex League.

With 36 riders in total in the Youth and under 12s events there were nearly as many young riders as seniors and vets. This is a sign of the impact that Youth Cycling Clubs are having in the London League area.

Youth teams present today included: Preston Park YCC, VC Jubilee, Team Darenth, VC Deal, Lee Valley YCC, Victory CC and VC Londres.
