Mercury's Italian sprinter Fabrizio Guidi has won the first stage of the Tour de la Région Wallonne, disputed today in Mouscron over 173.9 kilometres. Guidi beat last year's opening stage winner, Jo Planckaert (Cofidis), with Jean-Patrick Nazon (Francaise des Jeux) taking third in the bunch sprint.

The attack of the day came from Glenn d'Hollander (Lotto), Stijn Devolder (Eddy Merckx Boys) and Grzegorz Gwiazdowski (FdJ), but they were not able to hold off the bunch, and were caught inside 10 kilometres.

The majority of the peloton was still together to contest the sprint, with the honours going to Guidi, Planckaert and Nazon.
