Slioussareva wins in

Millward increases WC
lead
By Giana Roberge, Saturn Cycling Team
The seventh stop in the nine race Women's World Cup confirmed once
again why Saturn's Anna Millward has worn the Leader's Jersey from the
start of the series. Millward came into the Trophee International with
a 44 point lead over Acca Due's Mirjam Melchers, which she extended
courtesy of a third place behind Russian winner Olga Slioussareva (Carpe
Diem) and German Regina Schleicher (Michela Fanini).
The 121.9 kilometre course left the quaint town of La Brede and took
the field of 71 women through the beautiful Bordeaux Vineyards and into
the Bordeaux Port Town of Pauillac. Racing through the famous areas
of Medoc and Margeaux, the women scarcely had time to take note of the
history of the wine, as they were busy making history themselves on
the flat and extremely fast course. After four years of existence, the
Women's World Cup Races are being contested at faster speeds, and with
better tactics than they were in the series inception in 1998. No longer
is it that the strongest woman wins. Now it takes an entire team, committed
to the end goal.
The Saturn's team managed to control the race early on as the flat,
wide roads opened up into the expanse of the vineyards. Any breaks were
quickly negated with a high tempo sustained. The group arrived complete
for the two finishing 20 kilometre circuits, heading up into the hills
by the mouth of the waterway. In the strong crosswinds, groups managed
to separate away from the field, but Ina Teutenberg, Suzanne Sonye and
Petra Rossner were always there to ensure a sprint finish.
A late attack from Diana Ziliute (Acca Due O) established an early
lead out, and with three kilometres to the finish the bunch was single
file. Rossner delivered Millward with two hundred meters to go, but
in the final centimetres, it was Carpe Diem's Olga Slioussareva for
the win. Michela Fanini's Regina Schleicher was in second, and Millward
finished in third. Millward's third place finish ahead of Melchers,
who finished fourth, gave her an additional five-point lead in the World
Cup Series. She now has the jersey by 49 points over the Dutchwoman.
