The A.I.S. Australian Women's Road team returned to competition today
after a mid-season break, and the last month training in the northern
Italian mountains.
The Trophee d'Or Feminin is held in the region of Cher, hosted in
the village of St. Amand Montrond.
A strong field this year, including 1999 World Road Champion, Edita
Pucinskaite (Alfa Lum) and cycling legend Jeannie Longo (Ville Cite
Millau), as well as professional teams from France and Italy, and national
teams from Denmark, Russia and Luxembourg.
Early attacks in the stage saw a group of three off the front after
10 km, which held strong until the finish. Russians Youlia Martissova
and Valentina Karpenko, riding for their respective Italian professional
teams shared the majority of the work, with Sara Carrigan (A.I.S. Australia)
starting to find her legs towards the latter part of the stage. A comfortable
for most of the stage extending to 3'30 at 10 km to go, was never seriously
threatened. Some late aggression from the main bunch brought the gap
down a little by the finish.

The
sprint for 4th

Carrigan led out the sprint on the uphill drag to the finish, to eventually
finish 3rd and take the Under 23 classification for the day, and put
herself in a good position for overall honours, with 5 stages remaining,
and the all important 17 km time trial on Friday night.
Carrigan's A.I.S. Australian team-mate, Rochelle Gilmore easily won
the bunch sprint for 4th, and wears the points jersey in tomorrow's
stage. Tomorrow is a longer, flat stage of 130 km, with opportunities
for a group to gain time towards overall honours.
