Tour of the Tamar - Tattersall's Cup #5 - NETasmania, Australia, August 29, 2001Results Points score after race 5 Thuaux wins Tamar, McKenzie wins overallBy Rod Morris Victorian ace David McKenzie turned a three point deficit into a four point advantage, but it was NSW rider Phillip Thuaux that stole the limelight in today's Tasmanian leg of the Tattersall's Cup. The fifth and final race of the five week series culminated in brilliant sunshine on Tasmania's North Coast for the inaugural Tour of the Tamar under the Caribou Promotions banner. McKenzie, a seven time stage winner of the prestigious Herald Sun Tour, overtook pre-race series leader Brett Aitken to win the Tattersall's Cup, which had earlier included four races throughout country Victoria. On the eve of the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Aitken was complaining of a knee strain, but post-race admitted it did not stop from winning the series. "I was simply beaten by a better rider (McKenzie)," Aitken said. "I missed the breaks when it counted." McKenzie's successful series included, not only winning the Tattersall's Cup but the King of the Mountains Championship, as well as finishing third Baden Burke (Canberra) and Aitken in the Sprint Championship. "Winning this is the icing on the cake as far as my season goes so far," McKenzie admitted. "It will give me great motivation for the Herald Sun Tour in October." But the star of the day - nay, last seven days - was undoubtedly Phillip Thuaux. Thuaux (pronounced Thorcks) hails from Gosford in country NSW and has only been riding competitively two years. He is the reigning NSW State Road Champion and on August 26 (last Sunday) also won the Victorian State Road title. "I certainly can't complain about my form," Thuaux said. A member of the Australian Institute of Sport's elite road scholarship squad, Thuaux was part of a six man group which for almost 40 km of the race was spent chasing a further five rider breakaway bunch. "I was a bit nervous about how to peg that group back, but once we bridged the gap things fell into place." I was happy enough with the closing stages, but in the last couple of kilometres, the peloton was coming a bit quicker," he added. While the winner's time was officially 3 hours 38.20 minutes, McKenzie had to be satisfied with second, just 35 seconds behind Thuaux. "There wasn't much room to spare at the end," Thuaux said. Thuaux will now target the Tour of Sunraysia and Tour of Caledonia before the big one, the Herald Sun Tour. The Tattersall's Cup doubles as a selection race for the Herald Sun Tour, with the first 10 aggregate points riders all winning automatic berths. In terrific news for Tasmanian cycling, three riders Karl Menzies (fourth overall), Caleb Manion (equal fifth) and Gareth Atkins (10th) were among those qualifiers. Manion also won the much-sought after Sid Patterson Memorial Award, which recognises the best young talent, while Peter Milostic of NSW took over the lead in the Australian Cycling Federation's Rider of the Year award, which is decided on a point system. Tour Director Mr John Craven said the planning and execution of the Tasmanian race went without a hitch and it would almost certainly return to the Apple Isle in 2002. Tattersall's Tasmanian based Manager Mr Keith Butterworth, along with Launceston City Council's Deputy Mayor Ald. Anne Waddle were on hand for the award presentations at the Launceston City Hall.
