Dodd snatches the lead at World's venueBy Gerry McManus, cyclingnews.com correspondent The riders re-mounted for a difficult stage 3b in the afternoon, in the undulating countryside that welcomed the World Road Championships in 1982. A group of eight had stayed away for over 40 miles with the bunch breaking into chase groups behind. At one point there were nine groups on the road simultaneously but the race came back together for a while. The race-winning break came at around 50 miles with Rowan Horner (VC St Raphael), Grant Bayton (Prestige VC), Richie Cahill (Gore Bike Wear), Geoff Beetham (Prestige VC), Timmy Barry and Roger Morgan (Liphook Cycles). Their lead extended to 1'20 and Barry was race leader on the road again. Gethin Butler and Paddy Moriarty (both Gore Bike Wear) took up the chase and escaped the bunch. Unfortunately for Timmy Barry, they also took the yellow jersey rider with them, eventually catching the leaders and they all headed back to the Goodwood circuit for a sprint finish after five laps. Strong Rowan Horner managed to get a small gap on the final lap to hold on by three seconds over second placed Moriarty and Bayton in third. There is no change to the first seven overall after the time trial but it should be noted that Butler gained a number of places on the G.C.
