Surrey League Revolutions Five Day - NEGreat Britain, August 17-21, 2001Main page Results Previous stage Photos Stage 2 - August 18: Hellingley, 88 miles/142 kmIrish take command in stage 2By Gerry McManus Timmy Barrie (London Irish) captured both the stage win and overall leader's jersey in the Surrey League 5 Day race on Saturday, August 18. Barry went on the offensive after only a few miles of the 88 mile stage two in Sussex, taking four companions with him to form a breakaway group of Graeme Stirzaker (Angliasport), Roger Morgan (Liphook Cycles), Gary Dodd (Sigma Sport) and Rowan Horner (VC St Raphael). The Gore Bike Wear team saw the danger and Paddy Moriarty and Richie Cahill broke away from the bunch at around 30 miles, taking and then dropping one other rider. It took them another 30 miles to close the one and a half minute gap to make it seven in the lead. A fabulous chase by Matt Ellis (Cycleways) and Paul Pickup (Liphook Cycles) made the group up to nine with only two laps top go. Stirzaker was dropped on the one mile climb to Owlsbury Cross where riders were in a gear of 42x21 on this steep section of the 9 mile circuit. Gethin Butler (Gore Bike Wear) was controlling the bunch, jumping onto any attacks to stop any serious chases developing. On the final climb to Owlsbury Cross, Moriarty put the pressure on with continued attacks. Only Cahill, Barry and Dodd were able to stay with him. On the final downhill run in to the finish, Barry showed that his stage wins this year in the Tours Of Ulster and Munster were no fluke, by winning the four-up sprint from Dodd, Moriarty and Cahill. The overnight leader, Steve Dring, was without a team to help him retain his lead and he finished in the bunch, two and a half minutes behind. There are now three Irish riders in the top six overall.
