Koerts crashes out
Bankgiroloterij rider Stefan van Dijk has won the first stage of the
Ronde van Nederland, a 186 kilometre race from Rotterdam to Tilburg.
The stage finished in a mass sprint, with Van Dijk too fast for CSC's
Tristan Hoffman and Alexia's Ivan Quaranta.
A big fall with 150m to go took out Jans Koerts (Mercury) and Jeroen
Blijlevens (Lotto) amongst others. Koerts, who had been involved in
a long breakaway with Remco van der Ven, was taken to hospital afterwards
for X-rays. He lost consciousness after the fall, but the real problem
was a torn cruciate ligament behind his right knee. He will not start
stage two.

Rotterdam's Mayor Opstelsten fired the starting gun in Maasstad for
the first stage of the 41st ENECO Ronde van Nederland. 119 riders started.
John den Braber (AXA), a Maasstad local, went ahead after 12 kilometres
to greet his family. Two kilometres later, Glenn d'Hollander (Lotto)
punctured.
There were plenty of fireworks before the first Zwitserlevensprint
in Delft, won by Remco van der Ven (BankGiroLoterij) from Joost Legtenberg
(AXA) and Mauro Zinetti (Alexia). Van der Ven attacked a short time
later with Jans Koerts (Mercury) in pursuit. However, the Dutch champion
was 1'30 behind after 39 kilometres were covered by Van der Ven in the
first hour.
Remco won the first bonification sprint in Rotterdam (47.9 km) giving
him 3 seconds, and Koerts followed 50 seconds later. The peloton was
at nearly 4 minutes by this stage. Finally after 62 kilometres, Koerts
bridged the gap to Van der Ven, and the pair pushed their lead out towards
10 minutes. At the bonification sprint in Breda (107.1 km) they had
9'10 on Daniele Galli (Alexia) who took the remaining bonus second.
Shortly afterwards, Koerts and Van der Ven had to wait for 55 seconds
for a goods train at Zevenbergschenhoek.
By the third classification sprint (finish line in Tilburg), won by
Van der Ven again, the peloton was just 5'30 behind the leaders. There
was now more co-operation in the main group, since Koerts began to tire
in front and had to let Remco go alone. After 138 kilometres, Koerts
was caught, and Van der Ven followed 10 km later after a total of 123
kilometres in front of the race.
The peloton was now nervous in anticipation of the finale. The final
points sprint at Bladel/Reusel (km 159) was taken by Glenn d'Hollander
(Lotto) from Bert Hiemstra (Bankgiroloterij) and Bjarke Nielsen (CSC
Tiscali), and then the attacks started. Laurent Jalabert (CSC) tried,
as did Matteo Frutti, Leif Hoste, Davide Bramati and Kevin Hulsmans,
but they could get no more than 100 metres in front.
A fall with 13 km to go saw Marzio Bruseghin (iBanesto) off his bike,
but he made to the finish with the leaders. Michael Sandstod (CSC) tried
a couple of attacks in the final phase, but he was brought back each
time.
The first stage finished with a mass sprint but there was a fall at
150 metres to go. The sprint was won by Stefan van Dijk in front of
Tristan Hoffman, who just managed to get in front of Ivan Quaranta.
Unfortunately, Jans Koerts was one of the fallen riders, along with
Jeroen Blijlevens and Björn Cornelissen (AXA), who were taken to hospital
for observation.
