Stage 1 - August 22: Farnham - Farnham, 97 km

Julie Young wins first stage

By Giana Roberge, Team Saturn

The Grand Prix Feminin International du Quebec kicked off today in the quaint town of Farnham. The five day, six stage race will cover the mountainous area of Mt. Sutton, Quebec. The courses traverse through the beautiful greenness of the Eastern Townships, with each stage challenging the 90 plus rider field with daily mountain and points sprints.

The 97 kilometer first stage was a circuit around the outskirts of Farnham. Although it was only day one, the teams were eager to race, and by kilometre 10 a break of nine riders was clear of the field by 30 seconds. Saturn's Ina Teutenberg and Anke Erlank were both present in the break, along with Autotrader's Julie Young and Sarah Ulmer. VeriZon Wireless had two riders with Julia Farell and Andrea Hannos; Great Britain's Charlotte Hopkinson was also in the group. Intersport was represented by Pia Sundstedt, who was clearly the strongest rider other than Erlank in the break. Melissa Holt (Rona) was in the break, without teammate Genevieve Jeanson.

Once the break reached 1'30, Holt was called back to assist Jeanson and her struggling teammates reconnect. However, in front, the group worked smoothly together throughout the cross wind sections, while the Rona team fought to come to terms with what had grown to nearly a 2'30 gap. Teutenberg, winded from her effort to get Erlank and the group clear of the peloton, was dropped on the Mountain Sprint and rejoined her teammates in the main group.

In the final corners, it was a well rested Julie Young (Autotrader) coming to the forefront for the final 300 meters and holding off Erlank's late charge for the finish. Sundstedt, was third, as well as having sealed up the Mountain Points Jersey for the day. Young now wears the Gold Leader's Jersey, with a 5 second gap over Erlank. The main group finished roughly 1:50 down on the group of eight.

Tomorrow's 123 kilometer stage will test all with two Mountain Sprints and rolling terrain. It perfectly compliments the well rounded Saturn Team, and may give Jeanson an opportunity to move back into contention.
