DL/DH & XC MTB World Cup #7 - CDMKaprun, Austria, August 10-12, 2001Program
The weekend's World Cup mountain bike racing was marked by gradually improving weather, with rain so bad that Friday's cross-country qualifying time trial was cancelled. The rain eventually gave way to sunshine on Sunday for the cross-country, while in the meantime the downhillers battled sloppy conditions on a course that suited light, agile bike set-up and 'freeride' techniques more than gonads-out suicide downhilling. With just one round of the World Cup remaining, the women's cross-country and downhill titles were decided this weekend - Barbara Blatter (Specialized) and Anne-Caroline Chausson (Volvo-Cannondale) have unassailable leads. It's also noteworthy that Specialized's strategy of signing three very strong female riders has paid off: Blatter leads her team-mates Marga Fullana and Caroline Alexander in the overall top three. Giant team reportBy Steve Boehmke Team Giant riders provided promising finishes at the UCI World Cup race in Kaprun, Austria, this weekend. The Cross-country was held on a totally new, "classic" course that took the riders around the hills, town and ancient castle of Kaprun, while the downhill snaked from the top of the ski area to the lowest part of the city below. Thousands of spectators lined the courses on what will be the site for the 2002 World Championships. 1996 Olympic Champion Bart Brentjens led the cross-country race for 2 of 5 laps, until he slid out on a muddy downhill and let the top group by. "I was feeling good out there, and am pleased with my result," stated Bart, "I can still feel some damage in my thigh from my accident at the Grouse Mountain World Cup. It becomes apparent when I'm really on the gas, but it's getting better all the time. I'm looking forward to racing in the European Championships next weekend." Thomas Frischknecht was the eventual winner of the XC event this weekend, while Bart finished 8th, with Giant rider Rune Hoydahl right behind him in 9th. The downhill, however, was run in a rain-soaked, mud-lined, labyrinth of a course. Giant's David Vasquez, returning from a separated shoulder injury suffered at the first leg of the World Cups, finished a strong 7th place, and was equally pleased. "To win on these downhills, you need to have a strong heart," said Vasquez, "I'm planning on spending the next two weeks increasing my fitness, so that I can improve my results at the World Cup Finals and World Championships." South African Greg Minnaar obviously had the heart, lungs and technique to finish first in the downhill for his first World Cup Victory ever. Greg Minnaar won the men's World Cup downhill at the classic venue of Kaprun, Austria. The long and wet course provided an exciting outcome in the final after Greg had already won the semi-final. He improved upon what seemed to be a dream run by Cédric Gracia (FRA) by another 0.89 of a second with Nicolas Vouilloz (FRA) in the third place. The fastest downhill racers in the world gave their best today and Minnaar, a 19-year old from the south of the African continent, came out of the battle as a winner. A dream come true for him and all the team after his second place from last week and two fourth places this season. Greg had crashed in the semi-final but was confident about his form on this course. "I knew I had to keep it smooth in the technical part at the top of the course, I did just that and then gave it 100% after that. The top part was more my style, after that I had to pedal hard - I don't know where I got all that power, it just came from somewhere -- and then I enjoyed the last part with all the jumps. My Orange bike worked very well and the Michelins were great in the slippery conditions too," Greg explained in the finish after being wildly congratulated by his teammates, rivals and staff alike. Gracia was not able to relax when Greg was more than 2 seconds behind at the intermediate time: "I realized he could make that up on the pedaling sections because he is strong and has a lightweight bike! Observations like that make Global Racing Team's chief mechanic Patrick Griessen very happy: "For the last three years everybody was laughing at me when I was putting lightweight parts on Marielle's (Saner) bikes. Light Orange frames, lighter Mavic rims, 32 DT Swiss spokes and other parts, and everything's still strong enough to handle the stress, we don't even have many mechanicals." Greg's personal mechanic Mike van Zyl, his friend from South Africa, was shorter when he approached the winner with a smile and a tear in his eye: "About bloody time!" Greg is now second overall just 28 points behind Vouilloz with the World Cup final coming up in two weeks. "My goal for the season was to be in the top ten, then I changed it to top five, and now...." said an elated Greg. For team director Martin Whiteley the first victory was a reward after years of dreaming: "This is not just a win for Greg Minnaar or Global Racing but also for the continent of Africa. It's about everything that Global Racing stands for and it couldn't have happened in a better way." Greg's victory outshone today's results of other riders, but here they are: Missy Giove was second in the semi-final but crashed twice in the final and finished fifth, still on the podium. With no chance left to get the overall title, with hardly any chance of losing the second spot, and with team safely in first Missy's going for a single victory every weekend. Marielle Saner was fifth in the semi-final and seventh in the final. "I can't find the right level of risk," she said about being too much on the safe side this time after crashing twice a week ago. Sean McCarroll was 15th in the final after a major trip off the course. Naoki Idegawa and Daisaku Kaneko had great results after comfortably advancing into the final from the field of 150 riders and finishing 52nd and 59th respectively. Sean, Greg and Naoki all qualified for the Dual but were all eliminated in the first round. After Kaprun Missy is taking the team to Mt. Snow, Vermont for some US National Championship Series racing. World Cup finals follow a week later in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebec, Canada. Parent company of Global Racing, 23 Degrees Sports Management, signed two new athletes to their portfolio this week. 23 Degrees now acts as agents for English star downhiller, Fionn Griffiths, who has podiumed on nearly all Downhill women's World Cups this year. Another new star to be represented by 23 Degrees is European Junior Downhill Champion, Matti Lehikionen of Finland. Described by company director as "the next Minnaar", the 16 year old Matti proved his potential by finishing 16th in today's World Cup final.
