Day 1 - August 24: Time Trials, 20/31.7 km (W/M)Women - 20 kmBrändli wins women's TTSwiss rider Nicole Brändli, bronze medalist at last year's European U23 Championships in Poland, has won the 20 kilometre women's time trial that opened this year's championships in Apremont. Brändli beat last year's winner Lada Kozlikova (Czech Republic) by just 3.18 seconds in a close fought event. Russian Olga Zabelinskaia took third, 13.5 seconds behind the Swiss, while French hope Juliette Vandekerckhove placed fourth. Kozlikova was actually leading at the halfway point, but succumbed to the extreme heat on the way back, and fainted after she crossed the finish line. Results

Van Melis, a bronze medallist in 1998 and silver medallist in 2000, beat German Angela Brodtka and Frenchwoman Sophie Creux at the end of the 9 lap (108.7 km) race. The French had two riders (Beatrice Thomas and Virginia Moinard) in the lead on the seventh lap, but they were caught by the peloton in time for a bunch sprint. In the men's race, Giampaolo Caruso gave his home country its fifth gold medal in this even in the last 7 years. He had a 37 second lead at the start of the final 12.4 km lap, and managed to hold off German Eric Baumann and Ukranian Roman Luhovvy by 9 seconds at the finish.
