A week later and just down the road from the start of the Saturn Cycling Classic, the first annual Superior Circuit provided a 2.5 mile loop with all the elements - flats, rollers, and climbs.

The 60 deep men's Pro 1-2 race started fast with a break of four riders getting away after two laps. The group never gained more than 30 seconds on the field and was caught after several THF Realty team members began to chase. The next group to form off the front of the field seemed to be a serious one. Nate Busch (Monsoon/Rio Grande), Blake Caldwell (Mercury), Kelly Davis (THF Realty), Jon Tarkington and Alan McCormack (Vitamin Cottage/Morgul Bismark) soon had a lead of almost 40 seconds. With most major teams represented the race appeared to be over with 7 laps remaining. One key rider had another idea. After having his Tour de France ended prematurely and winning the previous weekend's Saturn Cycling Classic Jonathan Vaughters (Credit Agricole) moved to the front of the field. Within a lap he had caught the break and put most of the field in serious difficulty. Tarkington took notice of this and immediately countered hard when Vaughters eased the pace and he was soon joined by Brian White (Eldora Mtn Resort). Half a lap later they were joined by Kelly Ruddick (FCRC). Together the three gained time as the field slowed to recover. With the laps ticking away and the break fighting to avoid another onslaught of Vaughters' impressive form the trio gained ground. The final lap saw the break 40 seconds up on a hard charging field. Coming out of the final corner Tarkington attacked to ride away with the win while White out sprinted Ruddick for second. The pack was led in 37 seconds later by Jeffery Dickinson (Schwab Cycles/LRT) who was followed closely by Vaughters.

On the women's side, the Veritas team stayed true to its form with Anne Lannan setting an early tempo that gradually shattered the field every time up the half mile hill of the course. With two laps remaining and a confident two minute gap over the chasers, the lead group of six became feisty. Attacks by Margell Abel (Veritas), Gail Longenecker (Boise Cascade), and Karen Bockel (CSU), were all covered by one another. Then, leading into the last climb to the finish, it was Bockel who held the lead, but Abel, with the lead out for Lannan in mind, never let up and took the win with Lannan in third.

Race note: Veritas member Emily Gloeckner was absent Saturday as she competed at USCF Elite Crit Nats taking 8th place.
