Results and Reports for August 19 - 24, 2001UKPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews King of the BowlMilton Keynes, August 21, 2001By Ron Day, LVRC Region 7 Organiser The final race of the LVRC Region 7 King of the Bowl 2001 series was abandoned last night, August 21, after a mass pile in the peleton. Four riders sustained head injuries and two ambulances were in attendance treating the wounded. After the usual early flourishes, a break away finally formed including Kevin Farmer and Bob Thompson both of the Milton Keynes Cycling & Triathlon Club. The breakaway was eventually bought back after strong work from Bob Mitchell (Rockingham Forest Wheelers) and it was just after a counter attack had gone, again containing Farmer and Thompson, that the crash occurred. Murray Kirton (A5 Rangers), Steve Osborn (Rockingham Forest Wheelers), Bob Richards (Nene Valley RT) and Don Parry (Nene Valley RT) all received nasty injuries and race organiser Ron Day, himself just recovering from a racing accident, abandoned the race to allow access for the two ambulances. Overall leader of the grade A, B & C race, Bob Varney (Team Corley Cycles) was absent during the race, competing at Hillingdon in the E/1/2 race, having already secured the overall title. In the grade D, E & F category, overall series leader Dave Atkinson (North Bucks RC) was unhurt in the crash and secured the overall title from Stuart Walters (Kettering C.C.) and the injured Bob Richards (Nene Valley RT). The full overall tables will follow shortly. Next Tuesday evening, August 28, there will be a short criterium followed by the end of season meal and drinks. Any interested parties should contact Ron Day as soon as possible. Final race series reportA record number of riders supported the ever popular Tuesday night (21 August) LVRC King of the Bowl series based at the Milton Keynes Bowl in Region 7. Organisers from the promoting North Bucks Road Club reported an increase in overall participants to a record breaking 56 riders, and an increase in the weekly average attendance figures to nearly thirty riders per night. Grades A, B, and C were won by Bob Varney (Team Corley Cycles) in his first full season of LVRC racing after his solitary appearance at the end of last season. Varney recorded three wins during the season to clinch the overall title from Don Parry (Nene Valley RT) and last year's overall winner Joe Quill (Milton Keynes Cycling & Triathlon Club). In grades D, E, and F Dave Atkinson (North Bucks RC) recorded two victories and a steady stream of second and third places with consistent riding to clinch the overall title from Stuart Walters (Kettering CC) and Bob Richards (Nene Valley RT). Bowl site agent Dick Selley (North Bucks RC) finished in a fine sixth place despite his season being interupted by an increase in concerts at the Milton Keynes venue.
