The race started at a cracking tempo with Freeman active from the gun along with both Eadon and Mooney. Steve Osborn (Rockingham Forest Wheelers) was also showing good form after his recent trip to Le Etappe. Freeman finally broke the elastic with his constant attacking and gained a few laps of freedom before he was bought to heel by the fast moving bunch. More attacks followed and the bunch split with two notable local riders, Phil Murphy (Milton Keynes Cycling & Tri Club) and Ian Cooper (Bicester Millennium) in the second group. The front group of the grade A, B & C riders soon swept up the D, E & F group along with escapees Freeman, Stuckenbrook and Osborn. The next move to get a notable gap was the duo of Martin Eadon and Bob Mitchell, which at one point looked to have a sustainable lead. Big efforts from Varney and Freeman saw the race back together for a short while until the two Team Corley Cycles riders launched a number of consecutive attacks which eventually saw Freeman escape with 15 minutes remaining. Freeman was soon joined by Carl Stuckenbrook and Steve Osborn and with the help of the lapped Ian Cooper, set about staying away to the finish. With Varney and Mitchel not helping the chase and tired legs behind, the breaks lead reached a maximum of 30 seconds. A late but concerted chase - with Pete Mooney doing a lot of the driving - brought the breakaways back into sight of the bunch. Osborn attacked his breakaway companions on the bell and got a good gap only to be pulled back by Cooper with Freeman nicely placed on his wheel. With 200 metres to go Freeman launched his sprint to win comfortably from local mountain biker Stuckenbrook. With the bunch sprinting for fourth place there were still series points up for grabs and the small matter of outright victory in the grade D, E & F race, to be fought over. Non sprinter Bob Richards led out the bunch sprint with Mitchell and Eadon going to the right and Mooney and Varney to the left. Eadon came around Mitchell for fourth and Varney came around Mooney to claim sixth. With Richards fading rapidly his closest rivals in the grade D, E & F series both came around him with Stuart Walters taking the first D, E & F placing and series leader Dave Atkinson close behind in second. Third place was taken by comeback rider and site agent Dick Selley (North Bucks RC) who is stepping up his training, after a busy summer of concerts at the bowl, restricted his time. Selley is hoping to compete in 'Masters Week' in Majorca along with fellow North Bucks RC and former Milk Race rider Gordon Batcock, in October.
