USA Espoirs & Junior Road Championships - CNGainesville, FL, USA, August 2-5, 2001Day 1 - August 2: Junior M/W, Espoirs Time TrialsEspoirs/Junior Nationals kick off with Time Trial ChampionshipsBy John Alsedek Under cloudy skies that finally opened up with just 20 of the 430 participants left to finish, America's cycling future was on display as the Espoirs & Junior Road Nationals began today with the Time Trial Championship. The Espoirs (for men ages 19-22) and Juniors (men and women between 10 and 18, divided into four age categories) competed in cycling's ultimate 'race of truth': an individual test against the clock, in which each rider rides a set distance alone, with the fastest in each age and sex category winning. Thursday's action began with the 'glamour' event of the day, the Espoirs Time Trial; with a number of young professionals competing, it was expected to be an exciting race. And no one was to be disappointed, as the race came down to a battle between a pair of teammates and best friends, Michael Creed and Danny Pate of the Colorado-based Prime Alliance squad. For years, Creed - the younger by three years - has often had to ride in the shadow of Pate, a former Espoirs National Road Race Champion who last year raced for an elite Italian professional team. However, on this day, Creed turned the tables; riding a fixed gear of 55x14, Creed was even with Pate at the midway point of the 40-kilometer event, but took 19 seconds out of him in the latter portion, finishing with a time of 51 minutes and 42 seconds. Pate ended up second with a 52:01, while Jon Retseck (Mercury Developmental) placed third with a time of 52:54. Afterwards, an elated Creed said "Man, Pate's going to be mad! He's beaten me in every time trial this year...except for this one!" However, the Colorado Springs native was quick to give Pate credit: "Danny's the strongest guy out here - you just can't pretend that he isn't. He didn't have a good day, and I did, so I got him this time. I'm just really happy to win this one for my team." But the excitement was just beginning. In the Womens 17-18 race, the hot tip going in was last year's winner, Sarah Uhl (Perkasie, PA), who just last week won the Match Sprint (a short-distance track event) at the Junior World Championships. Uhl did a good time, missing third place by a mere 1/10th of a second. However, Oklahoma City native Magen Long was too strong for the rest, completing her 20-kilometer race in 30 minutes and 14 seconds, 19 ticks of the clock ahead of Sarah Hammer (Temecula, CA). Already a seasoned veteran - she's competed in eleven National Championships in both road and mountain biking - Long was very confident going into the time trial: "I really like time trials- it's a true test. My legs felt good, it was just a matter of going out and doing it." And then there was the Men's 17-18 contest. With 2000 winner Patrick McCarty having moved on to the Espoirs ranks, it was expected to be almost anyone's race. And it very nearly worked out that way, as unheralded 17-year old Bart Torre (Landisville, PA) set an early mark to beat that held up until the final third of the field began to finish...and then the times began to drop. Angetti Sheldrake (Englewood, CO) knocked a mere two seconds off Torre's time, and then Sheldrake's Mercury teammate Tyler Farrar (Wenatchee, WA) set a blistering time of 26:19 that lasted less than two minutes before a third teammate, Blake Caldwell (Boulder, CO), set what would be the eventual winning time of 26:12. Caldwell, who won the Mens 15-16 event last year, was absolutely ecstatic after winning the championship- and a trip to Portugal for the Junior World Championships in October: "I was REALLY nervous today- I didn't really know what to expect. But I just rode my own race, and it paid off." The Espoirs & Junior National Road Championships continue on Friday with the 184-kilometer Espoirs Road Race. The various Junior Road Races will be conducted in Flemington, FL on Saturday, August 4th, while the Espoirs & Junior Road Nationals conclude with the Criterium Championships at the Gainesville Motor Speedway on Sunday.
