Brochard wins first
stage
Jean Delatour's Laurent Brochard has won stage one of the Circuit
de la Sarthe from Ecommoy to Evron (197.2 km). He beat Credit Agricole's
Anthony Morin, with Franck Bouyer (Bonjour) taking third.
The stage's first climb, Mont Rochard (km 50), saw a group of 16 riders
get away, catching Spaniard Iker Flores who had attacked earlier. When
they reached the first finishing circuit, Laurent Brochard attacked
to reduce the group to 8. His teammate Patrice Halgand protected him
for the win, after the sprint was led out by David Millar (Cofidis).
American Lance Armstrong (USPS), in his first race on French soil
since the Tour de France last year, finished 41st after showing himself
at the front of the peloton quite often. However his teammate Christian
Vandevelde was in the break, which meant that Armstrong didn't need
to work too hard.
Tomorrow's second stage is between Evron and Tiercé, 192.1 kilometres
long.
