Stage 1 - April 26: Montalto di Castro-Castiglione del Lago, 184 km

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 team manager

The first stage of Giro delle Regione was marked by a was a cat. 2 climb at the 73km mark with the rest of the day being fairly flat. A break of nearly 20 riders got away near the climb with the Australians missing it totally. They paid for their mistake by having to chase it over the last 60 km along with the French and German teams. A group split of the front of the break away and stayed away to win with Manuel Quinziato taking the honors. Our guys finished in the bunch.

Stage 2 - April 27: Sambuca Pistoiese-Cutigliano, 128 km

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 team manager

The second stage looks to be by far the hardest in the tour with circuits arount the hills above Pistoia. The stage started with a cat 3 climb, followed by two cat 2s and two cat 1s. Our hope for the day was Scott Davis who didn't have his best day in the hills and finished 41st. The stage was one by prolific winner this year, Yaroslav Popovych riding for Ukraine.

Stage 3- April 28: Borgo a Mozzano-Riva Trigoso, 146 km

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 team manager

The third stage included two two categorised climbs. A cat 2 at 40km and a cat 3 close to the finish. The pace was hot from the start with attacks going from the gun. The Ukrainians controlled the main peloton until the final climb when the main contenders attacked for the stage. Scott Davis had a big go at getting clear but was bought back and finished in the main chase group. Popovych again showed his superiority with an extremely strong ride to run third to Bennati and Scarponi.

Stage 4 - April 29: Marina di Carrara-Carrara, 118 km

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 team manager

Today was an action packed day for the Australians with 2 of the guys crashing (Laidler and Mackey) with no serious injuries and Scott Davis making the front group of 10 coming to the last climb before puncturing on a descent and losing contact. Still, the form is coming on. The race started in Marina di Carrara and wound around the area over some twisty, rough roads with some tough climbs thrown in. There was a cat 1 climb followed by three cat 3s and the finish on another cat 1 climb. Unbelievably the stage was won by Popovych, with Scarponi continuing the battle to run second.

Stage 5 - April 30: Saint Vincent-Champoluc, 114 km

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 team manager

Stage 5 was held in Val de Aosta in the shadow of the Alps. A drizzly cold day greeted the riders for a stage which started with a pretty flat run up and down the valley then truned up into the mountains for a 15km climb rated cat 1, then more cimbing for another 11km to the finish. The first hour was covered at an average of 46 kph before the field was again obliterated by Scarponi and Popovych who fought out the finish, this time with Scarponi taking the honours. Scott climbed consistently and progressed steadily up the GC.

Stage 6a - May 1: S.Maria della Versa-Lodi, 64 km

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 team manager

Stage 6a was the first of two split stages on the last day. It was a fairly flat run from Santa Maria della Versa to Lodi. The Australians worked hard to control the many attacks and set Graeme Brown for the sprint. It was a bunch sprint but Graeme was blocked for a run after a rider in front of him pulled his foot. It was won by Ukraine Roman Luhovyy.

Stage 6b - May 1: Lodi-Lodi, 72 km

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 team manager

Stage 6b was another flat circuit race starting and finishing in Lodi. Last chance for a stage and the boys didn't dissapoint me. The team worked perfectly to a plan with Gene Bates getting into and early move which stayed clear until 15km from the finish. The others went into action keeping Graeme near the front helped by Gene. Graeme hit the front at 300 meters to go and won clearly giving him his first win since the Tour Down Under and the team their first European win this year. The team effort was something for them to be proud of. There were 186 starters and 138 finishers, and the Australian team finished intact.
