41st Vuelta al País Vasco - 2.HCSpain, April 9-13, 2001Main page Results Previous stage Stage 5a - April 13: Lekumberri-Lasarte-Oria, 105 kmRumsas rides into the leadBy Gabriella Ekström, cyclingnews.com correspondent Lithaunian Raimondas Rumsas (Fassa Bortolo) won the decisive stage of Vuelta a Pais Vasco, and won the yellow jersey from Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) when he rode the 10 kilometer time trial course in 14.53. Stage 5a between Lekunberria and Lasarte-Uria was 105 kilometers long and mostly flat. The only climb on the course was third cat Xoxoka. Many riders were hoping that they would get into a break, and add at least a couple of seconds to the better time triallists in the peloton, but no-one managed to get more than a minute and a half, and they were all brought back in a rush. Michael Boogerd, Davide Extebarria (Euskaltel) and Abraham Olano (ONCE) were some of the riders who were active at the front, the latter probably just to strech his legs before the bigger challenge in the afternoon. The peloton was compact with just a kilometer to go, and the pace was set by Mapei and Rabobank. Just like all the other days, Davide Extebarria started the sprint early, but wasn't prepared to the sharp left hand turn close to the line. Most of the riders lost all of their speed in order to stay upright, and Extebarria lost the chance of winning the stage. Stefano Garzelli (Mapei) who was closest to Extebarria when he came to a stop, immediately went away and won the sprint in front of Igor Astarloa (Mercatone) and Extebarria had to settle with third.
