Day 5 - April 22

An underdone Gary Neiwand was caught at the back of the field with young Jobie Dajka started to sprint around the back of the straight on the last lap. Neiwand admitted he 'got caught out' and wasn't fully prepared physically or mentally. The Olympic medallist—who turned 34 just before last September’s Olympics—says he doesn't want to compete in any major events this year. However, unlike his last break from the sport which lasted 18 months he wants to remain involved in either a training or team management capacity.

In the 40km men's sprint former world cup race winner, Japanese rider, Kouji Yoshii, split the field with a withering sprint with about 67 laps to go of the 160 lap event. Within five laps he lapped the field ensuring an easy win.

Earlier in the 10k Women's scratch races Kerry Meares secured her fourth gold for the championships when she outlasted NSW rider Kate Bates.

It was an afternoon of spills, Anna Meares was carried off the track by stretcher after crashing heavily in the U19 20k points race final.
