After numerous incidents, more than usual for this unique race, only about five teams were in contention for the win. In the end, Phi Delta Theta fraternity was the strongest team left standing, claiming its 3rd victory of all time. 33 teams began the 200-lap, 50 mile race, but a large crash early on split the field. A number of strong teams were quickly put a lap down, including the defending champion and independent favorite, the Cutters. The top teams began to take advantage of this unlucky, but soon to be all too familiar occurrence. However, bad luck plagued many teams throughout the race and once again crashes reduced the contending field. The pole sitter, Phi Gamma Delta, was involved in both crashes and suffered flat tires, pulling off the lead lap for good. Alpha Tau Omega, Briscoe, Cinzano, and Dodds House, all top ten qualifying teams, all fell victim to misfortune. Midway through the race Teter, the number ten qualifying team, showed their ability. The Teter rider broke away from the pack, as is customary to build a small buffer for an upcoming rider exchange. Yet the Teter rider did not come in for the exchange as the lead pack assumed, and soon the rider had an almost 100 meter gap. It took about five laps for the other leaders to realize that a significant lead had formed, and began to reel in the solo break. With less than 60 laps to go, five teams remained on the lead lap, all taking turns at the front. The second qualifying team Delta Chi, was lead by senior and rider council chair Jason Sonneborn. The other four teams included Teter, Chi Phi, Phi Delta Theta, and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Once again, fate dealt a tough blow for two teams, as both Delta Chi and Chi Phi were involved in a back stretch crash with slower riders. This put both teams more than a lap down, and virtually out of the contention with only 30 laps remaining. Similar to the middle of the race, Teter exploded ahead with another break away, and as before did not exchange. After a few laps they had built another 100-meter gap between them and second place Phi Delta Theta. Sigma Phi Epsilon trailed close behind in third. The crowd soon began to divide its support, with Phi Delt and other greek-team fans pushing the second place Phi Delt rider to bridge the gap, and with many residence hall fans combining their support for the only residence hall team left in contention. The Phi Delt team, lead by senior Josh Beatty, made many exchanges in a short time period to keep fresh legs on the bike and to catch the leading team Teter. As time wore on the strategy began to work, and soon the Teter team began exchanging more, allowing the Phi Delts to catch up. With less than 10 laps remaining, the Phi Delt team launched its solo break, and at a much better time. Junior Matt Marketti took the white flag to signal the last lap of the race, the second place Teter team was almost 150 meters behind. Sigma Phi Epsilon was in third by another 25 meters. As the checkered flag waved the Phi Delt rider sat up and raised his arms in victory. The crowd of Phi Delt supporters swelled and eventually rushed the inner field carrying their four-member team on their shoulders. With three laps to go, four teams were still in contention on the same lap. Kappa Alpha Theta, The Roadrunners, and Kappa Delta were close together and began pulling away from Alpha Gamma Delta. As the white flag signaled the last lap of the race, the defending champion Thetas and the Roadrunners began to pull ahead. The race was down to two teams. The Roadrunners put their sprinting hopes in what seemed to be the most unlikely of the four-member team, freshman and rookie rider Jenn Wangerin. The other members of the team were all seniors and had previous race experience. As the leaders entered the second turn, Wangerin took the inside line to come alongside the veteran Theta rider. Down the backstretch the two were neck and neck, but in the third turn Wangerin put any doubts about her sprinting abilities to rest as she accelerated away without looking back. Capitol CriteriumBy Jason Waddell The Capitol Criterium on Saturday is held in front of the state capitol and is approx. a 0.8 mile course with one hill. The weather today is mid 80's deg F. The format for the weekend is a two separate criteriums with prize lists for each day. This race has in the past been a stage race but this year the organization of the race has changed hands and the new promoters have decided on a two day crit format. The men's Category 1, 2, 3 race was scheduled for 60 minutes. The 27 man field started off at a blistering pace with Mercy Fitness riders using their superior numbers to launch many attacks. The only attack that stuck was when Bret Crosby (Hybrid) attacked to collect a prime and then he settled into his solo breakaway. One lap later Steve Cate (Mercy Fitness) made a jump on the hill to bridge the gap only to have Will Letendre (Hybrid) covering for his teammate. Cate continued on with Letendre not doing any work and the two joined Crosby. The three rider break never gained more than 30-45 seconds on the rapidly diminishing field. Back in the field the remaining Mercy Fitness riders were trying to send riders off the bridge the gap to the leaders but none of their efforts worked. With 3 laps remaining Jason Waddell (MathisBrothers.com/CRRC) attacked on the hill and closed to within 20 seconds of the three breakaway riders. Bret Crosby (Hybrid) came in alone 5 seconds ahead of Cate (Mercy) to take the win. ResultsCapitol Criterium Men 1/2/3 Day 2. River Market CriteriumThe Men's Cat 1/2/3 started much the same as Saturday's race with a flurry of attacks and regrouping by the field. The Mercy Fitness and Hybrid teams were most active with many of the MathisBrothers.com category 3 riders stepping up to do this race to help me with the early attacks.Around 15 minutes into the 60 minute race, a breakaway containing Randy Eller (Team FDM), Will Letendre (Hybrid), Steve Cate and Mike Zingaro (Mercy) and Jason Waddell (MathisBros) formed and got a gap. This group worked fairly well together but the Mercy riders were not happy with the make-up of the group and their team was driving the field in pursuit. At the same time that the break was being caught Waddell (MB) counterattacked and a break of Cate and Mike Stewart with Ryan Peterson (Mercy), Eller, Letendre, Waddell instantly got a significant gap. With Mercy happy with the numbers and Waddell helping to drive the break the field was out of contention. This group worked well together for around 10 minutes until Peterson (Mercy) attacked and was not immediately covered and got a 10 second gap. Waddell (MB) and Letendre (Hybrid) set off in pursuit with Cate (Mercy) being the only other rider to follow. The gap to Peterson (Mercy) steadily increased to the chase group of Waddell and Letendre because of Cate sitting on the two riders covering for his teammate. Peterson finally lapped the field with about 10min remaining in the race and the Mercy riders in the field went to the front to prevent Waddell and Letendre from also gaining a lap. With the win sewn up the race for second was on between Cate, Waddell, and Letendre. With Waddell and Letendre keeping the tempo up and Cate sitting and being very fresh from not working. With two laps to go Waddell attacked dropping Letendre and dragging along Cate who finally worked to stay away. Through the start/finish line with one lap to go Waddell attacked Cate and was immediately covered and the cat and mouse game began all the while Letendre was coming back strong. Letendre caught the two on the backside of the course and went straight through only to be overtaken with three turns to by Waddell. Before two turns to go Cate snuck by Waddell and led through the tight turns and beat Waddell by a wheel length. Ryan Peterson rode a very aggressive race and his team executed perfect team tactics to take the top two spots. WomenThe Women's Cat 1/2/3/4 race was a very aggressive race with numerous attacks by Magen Long (Nantucket Nectars) and Kerri Richardson (MathisBrothers.com). With 15 minutes remaining Richardson (MB) attacked solo and established a 10-15 second lead and held the gap over the three chasers who were working well together. With two laps remaining Long (NN) attacked and bridged solo to Richardson and then sat on Richardson and won the sprint.
