Taking both the sprints prize and the overall leadership, Coutts was taking over from where he left off last year where his aggressive riding had won him the supporting event series. The Premier race was won by the 1999 Scottish Road champion, Ken Russell - Edinburgh Road club. Russell rode the perfect event and in the cold windy conditions was clearly the race 'strongman.' After only one lap his positive riding created the only break of the race with five riders holding a 10 second advantage until six laps to go. Jason McIntyre - Velo Ecosse, was the only rider to bridge the gap but Russell's attack as soon as the junction was made was too much for anyone to counter. Keith Mailer - Velo Ecosse, riding for McIntyre, tried to to close down the flying Russell but the Edinburgh Road club rider was to prove to strong. At the line Ken Russell took a fine victory by 14 seconds from the chasing group and Jason McIntyre won the sprint for second place with Tim Allan - Kingdom R.T. the Sprint's Competition leader on the night, taking third. Gareth George organiser for the Edinburgh Road Club said that he was delighted with the first event of the series and pointed out that the cancellation of the Royal Highland Show in June would create a huge opportunity for further cycling promotions at this excellent race venue with its numerous options on closed roads. SCU President, Ian Sinclair, was present at the race and was also keen to investigate the possibility for further expansion for Scottish racing at Ingliston.
