Gold Coast CATS CC Criterium

Gold Coast CATS CC Criterium

Burleigh Qld, April 15, 2001

Sixty riders were on the start line this week, which was quite satisfactory considering the nearby and ever-popular Murwillumbah Masters Tour is held over the Easter weekend, attracting a large number of masters riders from south east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

There was an early break of six in the A Grade field, and after 10 minutes this had grown to 9, but from this point on their rhythm was broken and the field was soon together again. Meanwhile B Grade had got off to only a moderate start, and after 20 minutes they were caught by A Grade. This is where the fun and games began!

Despite the best efforts of officials the two grades stayed tightly mixed together, so with no solution in sight the decision was made to combine both races, with one set of prizemoney only. After 40 minutes, last week's winner Crackles Cahill and Riki Lanyon rode off the front, building a maximum lead of 20 seconds with 10 minutes to race. At this stage the bunch seemed uninterested in the two leaders, but by the bell the lead was down to 13 seconds, and Cahill and Lanyon were looking vulnerable.

Into the last lap and Lanyon put in a huge turn for Cahill, which enabled Cahill to make it two in a row with an eight second win, while Lanyon was swallowed up 50 metres from the line and missed out altogether. Jon Cantwell led the bunch home from Mark Brady and Troy Stacey, with 18 year old Paul Carrigan the first B Grader in 5th place overall.

Less than a wheel separated the first four riders in C Grade, with Laurie Mildenhall flashing down the outside to win from Werner Rogosenski, John Mildenhall and Shane Seip. Wily Stan James had his wheel in front, as he often does, when it mattered in D Grade, beating last week's winner Corey Turnbull and Maurice Liussi, while Alan McMinn slipped under the handicapper's guard when he was too fast for Doug Wood in E Grade.
