April Fools Day saw the staging of the Starkles Open, run, for the first time, at the Nerang Cycling Centre on the Gold Coast which boasts one of the very few off-street criterium circuits in Australia. This annual event is the Gold Coast Goldstars major event for the year, and is the biggest open criterium event in the region with over 260 riders of all ages and abilities and from all Gold Coast and Brisbane clubs competing for over $3,000 in prize money. The day started at 8am under cloudy skies with the threat of rain always in the air; however, apart from a reasonably heavy shower during the Masters A race, the day remained fine until the final presentations at 1:30pm. Gold Coast riders Mark Laspina and Sara Carrigan stole the limelight in the men's and women's A grade events. A large field of over 40 A grade riders hotly contested the main event with local hot shots, Jon Cantwell, Ben Day, Jayson Austin and Andy Stewart always in contention until Mark Laspina, Shem Guthrie and Leigh Palmer broke away in the last few laps to grab a seven second gap which was never threatened.
Laspina, who is a member of the Footscray club, won the bunch sprint over fellow break-away riders, Leigh Palmer (Velo) and Shem Guthrie (Astra). Sara Carrigan (CATS) won the women's A race from fellow Academy of Sport attendee, Karen Sumpton (Goldstars), with third going to Liz Young (Hamilton). Women's B was won by Diane van Stiphout (Goldstars) who also took out the sprint prime and won the $100 raffle. Tim Francis overcame a strong Masters A field in the final sprint to take out the premium masters event. Goldstars club officials were ably assisted on the day by senior officials from Murwillumbah, the Broncos and Logan City clubs as well as Chris van Roon from the CATS. South Australia's Olympic gold medallist Brett Aitken continued his great form in local competition by taking out the 2001 SACF State criterium championships at Regency Park. The event was contested over 1 hour plus two laps combined both "A" and "B" grade riders into one main event that attracted 81 riders. Racing was fast and furious right from the start with attacks going off the front of the bunch in rapid fire succession. The average speed in early laps on the fast one kilometre course hovered around the 47 km/h mark as the small breakaway bunches, in general containing no more than 3-4 riders tried to escape the big bunch. Only one fall marred the race at the 12 minute mark involving Keith Wong and Syd Carter but fortunately both riders escaped injury other than the usual scraped skin. Aitken played a wait and see game after being in a couple of earlier attacks and used his powerful sprint to win the title by coming off the front with less than one hundred metres to the finish line. Matt Millar was able to hang on to the Olympian's wheel but was powerless to do anything else, while Chris Luxton was a further length back in third place. Report courtesy of www.impactservices.net.au Results1 Brett Aitken 2 Matt Millar 3 Chris Luxton Ray Smith Annual Minlaton 2 day TourSA, March 31-April 1, 2001 Yorke Peninsula South Australia was again host to the running to the Annual 2 day Ray Smith Tour with over 90 competitors from around the state competing for $4800 in prizemoney. 2000 tour winner, Alan Gill, once again took line honors in 3 stages and winning the General Classification by 9 seconds to Mittiga Team rider Tony McLoughlin. A further 4 seconds was McLoughlin's team mate, Peter Moore with Tyco's Mike Ridding at 3'27. Stephen Nash was 5th at 3'37. The tour was run over 4 stages with stage distances varying from 32km to 55kms. Strong cross and tail winds on both days made it easy for the trio of Moore, McLoughlin and Gill to gain valuable time advantage over the field.
