Saturn dominate women's race

Ina Teutenberg and Anna Millward gave the Saturn cycling team a perfect result in the first round of the BMC Software Grand Prix, the Downtown Criterium in Austin, Texas. Teutenberg and Millward combined with Autotrader.com's Sarah Ulmer to lap the field in the 60 minute event, and Ulmer was forced to settle for third place.

Saturn had nine riders in the field, and used their strength to set a high tempo at the beginning. After 20 minutes, Anna Millward was the first to attack, opening up a gap with Sarah Ulmer. Ina Teutenberg wasted little time in bridging up and the three were away. They took another 20 minutes to lap the field, and the three had ample time to sort out the sprint.

Millward and Teutenberg are two of the best sprinters in women's cycling, and had no problems in relegating Ulmer to third place. As Millward is targetting the World Cup this year, it was better tactically that Teutenberg won, and she may now be the protected rider for the series.

Davidenko claims men's title

Navigators' Vassili Davidenko took the honours in the 90 minute men's criterium, held at 7:30pm after the women's event. The team benefitted from aggression throughout the race, placing Belgian Franky Van Haesebroucke in a 2 man break near the beginning, then Mark Walters in a mid-race break with seven other riders.

With all the major teams represented, this looked to be a winning move as the gap grew to 40 seconds. However with 20 minutes to go, Davidenko bridged up, causing a big reaction in the peloton. The field quickly brought the break back, but Navigators fought to control the race until the end.

Vassili Davidenko showed he had good legs by beating Mercury's Baden Cooke by two bike lengths, with Canadian Charles Dionne (7Up) in third.
