There are a few noticable gaps in the start list for the Elite women's 24.5 kilometre time trial, that starts at 15:20 European time on the Le Croisty - Plouay course. Along with the absence of Leontien Van Moorsel, Anna Wilson, Clara Hughes, Joane Somarriba, Edita Pucinskaite and Diana Ziliute, last minute withdrawals include Italian Alessandra Cappellotto and Russian Zulfia Zabirova.

The Italian has been suffering from an inflammation of her knee that she injured in a fall during the Olympic Road Race in Sydney. Her place was taken by Sara Felloni. Zulfia Zabirova's withdrawal will place a lot of pressure on her to perform in the road race (if she starts), as she may see her contract with Acca Due O run out next season.

Of those who are present, the favourite's title probably rests with Hanka Kupfernagel (Germany), although Olympic silver medallist Mari Holden will surely be aiming to better her performance in Sydney. She has a good chance as well, as the final starter Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli doesn't particularly enjoy the cold conditions. But Longo is a fierce competitor, and will certainly come close on her home ground to winning World Championship Gold.

Others to look for include Sarah Symington, Ceris Gilfillan (GBr), the Lithuanian Polikeviciute twins, and Tracey Gaudry (Aus).

Route Description

The elite women's time trial starts in Le Croisty outside of Plouay, and is 24.5 kilometres in total (identical to the junior men's course). The first 8 kilometres (to Le Croix de Nations) is all downhill, dropping 100 metres before it levels out. After a small rise at kilometre 14, the parcours descends further to an altitude of 50 metres. The final climb is with 3 kilometres to go, a 1.5 km drag at 4 percent that should really determine who the strongest rider is.
