18 year old Juliette Vandekerckhove gave France a flying start in their World Championships by taking the gold medal in the opening event, the junior women's 16.1 kilometre time trial. Starting last, the French favourite clocked 22'16 (43.38 km/h) on the downhill course to beat Australia's Katherine Bates by 31 seconds and the Netherlands' Bertine Spijkerman by 45 seconds.

The early pace was set by Belgian Ine Wannijn who rode 23'21 after starting 15th on the grid. She was not surpassed until Bates came through with a storming ride of 22'47. However, there were still 10 riders to come after the Australian, although her time was quite fast. Fancied Dutch rider Bertine Spijkerman came closest, with 23'01, but none of the other top 10 riders got under 23 minutes.

When Vanderkerckhove came on, she was up to speed, and was in the leading position at the second time check. She carried on all the way into Plouay, up the final 1.5 kilometre drag and was clearly the best on the day. Vandekerckhove finished second in 1999 to Genevieve Jeanson in this event, as well as winning the individual pursuit this year at the junior world championships in Italy, again beating Kate Bates in the final.
