The small fields of diverse standards resulted in the running of two races. A & B grades looked forlorn as passing showers passed over, however the latter half of the 45 minute race saw solid attacking riding from John Claxton and ambitious Veteran Mick Buckley. At three laps to go Buckley was 30 metres clear, head down and going for it. Victory eluded him as, in the end the form rider of the moment bolted by to take the win. Warren "Wacca" Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles) made it three in a row, two crit's and a hilly road race, not too bad given his reputation as a "trackie". Claxton managed second ahead of Buckley and Cameron Lester took fourth. C & D grades mirrored the efforts of the senior riders in that the attacking was saved for the second half of the racing. Of note was the presence of Canadian visitor Anne Yew, finishing out of a place Yew was extremely attentive at the front of the field and displayed poise in the blustery conditions. Frank Cipriano took the sprint from Matt Marques and John Jones, with consistent competitor John Groves fourth The Lenny Hammond Memorial, on 17 Sept, is the final road race for the season. The Waverley Park Crits will run through daylight saving, Tuesdays starting 6pm. Two wins from two starts for O'Mara Cycles rider Warren Knevitt after surviving a late challenge from Geoff Thompson at the finish line at Modella in Gippsland. A and B grades rode together with some hard efforts in the windy conditions putting many in difficulty. The finale looked set for an upset as Thompson (Bikeland) slipped under Knevitt who responded with a timely throw to retain the victory. Russell Newnham (Pro-Motion) took third ahead of Shaun Collins and Rob Bilke. C grade allowed father and son team Ken and Michael Ford too much space in the second lap. The youngster flipping Dad in the final metres, no early Fathers Day gifts here! Simon Clarke and Jamie Malizswiski followed some minutes later. D grade's race was one of attrition with the pace causing the small field to dissolve on lap two's hills. Victory to 17yo Tyrin Simpson, enjoying his first win among the grown-ups. Noted veteran David Hill had the measure of John Groves in Tyrin's wake and John Sheard struggled in alone for fourth. 5 Sept is the first Tuesday night at Waverley Park for the season with weekly racing through summer. The final road race of the club's calendar is the Lenny Hammond Memorial on the 17th at Modella over the flat handicap course.
