Ziliute keeps number one

Lithuania's Diana Ziliute has maintained her lead over Australian Anna Wilson after yesterday's Olympic women's road race. She finished third in the race, one place ahead of Wilson and has a 90 point buffer on the Australian, with only three major races left in the season. In third place is Hanka Kupfernagel, who gained silver while golden girl, Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel moved up to fourth from eighth.

In the team's rankings, Acca Due O-Lorena Camicie improved their number one position, and look to be impregnable for the rest of the season. They lead Alfa Lum and Saturn, with Gas Sport in fourth place. Lithuania stays number one in the nations rankings, with Ziliute, Pucinskaite and the Polikeviciute twins the main contributors. The Netherlands are in second place, and Germany third.

No Sandstød in World's TT

Danish time trialist, Michael Sandstød, will not start in the World Championships ITT. He still hasn't got the time trial bike that he was supposed to have by the Tour de France and doesn't want to do a mediocre performance on Matt Gilmore's bike. He will use the latter in the coming Olympic time trial, after a bike was delivered by Look for the Tour, but was built with completely the wrong measurements.

"I just don't care to spent more energy on preparing for the TT World's and then get a lot of criticism for not doing my best as I did last year," he said to Danish daily BT.

Dutch World's team

Three of the Dutch coaches, Jean Paul van Poppel, Monique Knol and Herman Snoeijink have announced their selections for the World Championships in Plouay, October 10-15. Men's coach, Gerrie Knetemann will wait until October 2.

Leontien van Moorsel is still on the list for the road race and the time trial, but in Sydney yesterday she told NOS television that "I'm not going to the World Championships". She will stop her season after the Olympic time trial next Saturday, however the KNWU hasn't received an official cancellation from her yet.

No season start for Sven Nijs

Belgian cyclocross star, Sven Nijs will miss the start of the international cyclocross season. The Rabobank rider has had an injury (tendinitis) to his left knee for several weeks now, and he is uncertain about his future this winter.

He will not be able to start before October, "And when I begin, my condition will not be 100 percent. That's the reason I am not thinking any more about the overall victory in the coming Superprestige series, and I also have doubts about the World Cup. Maybe I have to think about the World Championships," said Nijs who won both the Superprestige series and the World Cup last season.
