Museeuw speaksBelgian cyclist, Johan Museeuw gave a press conference today, for the first time since his accident in August. To a media gathering in Ichtegem, Belgium, he expressed his desire to compete at the top level again. "I hope to cross the line of a big race with my arms in the air again next season, preferably a classic," he said. "There is only one way for me, and that's the way to the top. I want to prove for myself that I can be a top rider again. A rider who sets an example and to whom others can improve themselves." Museeuw doesn't remember anything about the accident. "I know I stepped onto my motorbike. Then I only remember that I was transferred from intensive care to a normal room." It was the second severe misfortune in three years for Museeuw. "I've never thought for a single moment: why me again? Life is just full of risks and you have to accept that. Most important is that I can race again," adding that he has sworn off the motorbike for now. "Domo-Farm Frites needs me. I am still of great value, inside and outside cycling. The first time I could ride on the rollers again, I had tears in my eyes. Not just from the pain. I've gone trough a very emotional phase, which actually isn't completely over yet. But I'm already happy I'm freed from that terrible headache [although apparently he still had to wear some dark sunglasses]. The injuries will heal." "Last week, I still couldn't even walk; now I can ride on the rollers for a while. I even had a 3 hour power training session." He concluded with an electrical analogy, "A man hangs by an electrical wire. If they cut it, it's over. With me, they've already messed with the isolation twice, but the wire is still there." Lieven Maesschalk said Museeuw will work on his strength for the next four weeks. "We have to bring the muscles back to strength. In two weeks time, the pin in his left shoulder will probably be removed. In November he should be able to hit the road again." World's teams
