Olympians shine
Italian national coach, Antonio Fusi received a big moral boost on
today's 50th edition of the Italian classic, Coppa Placci, after three
of the Olympic team placed in the top five. The winner was Francesco
Casagrande (Vini Caldirola) who attacked on the final climb to beat
the in-form (but out of the Olympic squad) Davide Rebellin. Michele
Bartoli (Mapei) took third and teammate Paolo Bettini 5th, with the
fourth member of the Italian team (in this race), Marco Pantani finishing
25th at 2 minutes down. Danilo di Luca (the 5th member) is currently
in the Vuelta.
Fusi was saved the embarrassment of having Davide Rebellin win again
after Casagrande attacked with 7 kilometres to go on the 616 metre climb
up to San Marino. He put 36 seconds into Rebellin by the finish and
was in excellent form. Rebellin and Bartoli finished together, while
Simeoni (Amica Chips) was a further 25 seconds behind followed by Bettini.
Casagrande rated the victory as one of his best this year, better
than his win in La Fleche Wallone and just below his Giro stage win
into Abetone. He will contest the Giro di Romagna tomorrow, the GP Fourmies
on September 10 and the Giro di Lazio (Sep 16) before flying out to
Sydney.
Pantani's place was pormising for the team, after he has spent the
past few days on antibiotics to treat a tooth abscess. He will ride
the Giro di Romagna tomorrow as well.
