Dutchman Max Van Heeswijk (Mapei) defied the final few climbs to win the 80th edition of the Paris-Brussels, beating Dane Frank Hĝj (FdJ) and Belgian Ludovic Capelle (Ville de Charleroi) in a mass sprint. The 249 kilometre classic started in Soissons, near Paris and finished in the Belgian capital of Brussels.

Van Heeswijk earned the victory as he has spent a lot of the year leading out Mapei's other sprinters like Tom Steels, Oscar Freire, Fred Rodriguez and Stefano Zanini. However, in the Italian super squad, each rider normally gets their due reward. Today, Van Heeswijk was led out by Axel Merckx with one kilometre to go, and then he latched onto Frank Hĝj's wheel for the final few hundred metres to take his 6th win this season.

The team had counted on Stefano Zanini, winner in 1998, however the Italian was not feeling up to it by the end. Michele Bartoli and Paolo Bettini did their bit in attacking, and Mapei were one of the strongest teams in the race.
