Van Moorsel doesn't disappoint

Leontien overtakes

Dutchwoman Leontien van Moorsel has not only become the most successful cyclist in a single Olympic Games, but also the most successful Dutch athlete in Sydney, after she surpassed swimmer Inge de Bruijn with three gold medals and a silver in just four events.

One of her main goals was in fact to win the time trial, and she realised that today, posting 42 minutes for the 31.2 kilometre, two lap course. She beat USA's Mari Holden by 37 seconds, and Frenchwoman Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli by 52 seconds, after Holden turned in a fantastic ride on the day. In fourth once again was Australia's Anna Wilson, who was close to Holden by halfway, but faded in the second half as the climb and corners took their toll.

Van Moorsel was fastest at every time check, and she even caught the rider in front of her, German Hanka Kupfernagel just before the finish. Despite a little to-ing and fro-ing, Leontien eventually outsprinted the German to cross the line ahead of her.

The early pace was set by Atlanta dual bronze medallist, Clara Hughes (Can) whose 43.12 held for quite some time until the final wave finished, and she was eventually pushed to 6th. However, challenges from the Lithuanians and Germans failed to unseat her, as well as Russian defending champion, Zulfia Zabirova. Starting last, Zabirova was unable to repeat the form that won her the gold medal in 1996, and more recently the Tour de Suisse Femenine. She eventually finished 12th, 2.22 behind Van Moorsel.

Although Van Moorsel's thrid victory was not really a surprise, given her form, Holden's ride was certainly one of her best, as she guided her bike around the technical course to end up just 37 seconds behind the Dutchwoman. Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli, in what is (presumably) her last Olympics, rode faster in the second lap than the first, and this was what clinched the bronze for her from Anna Wilson.
