Melchers in a tight finish

Dutch National team member, Mirjam Melchers secured the final overall classification in the Netherlands Ladies Tour after finishing second in the closing 19.3 kilometre time trial in Dronten today. She overtook German Ina Yoko-Teutenberg who had earlier captured the lead after winning the morning's stage. In the end, Melchers' 19 second gap to Teurtenberg in the time trial was enough to give her the overall.

The Ladies Tour was the last test before Sydney for 24 year old Melchers. She is in good shape and things are going quickly with her. . Five years ago she still played soccer in her hometown of Gendt and she had not done a bike race. But her soccer team stopped and she started cycling.

"It's going fine, but I'm not yet a real favourite for the Olympics. The big ones are Ziliute, Wilson and Van Moorsel," she said.

She is the Dutch road champion and this Saturday won the third Holland Ladies Tour. She won because of her individual qualities as well as her team tactics. On Tuesday the Dutch women will go to Sydney. "I have good morale. I'm better in the time trial than last year. But the most important race is the road race (on her birthday). With Leontien van Moorsel, Chantal Beltman and myself we have three strong riders. And we will work together," she affirmed.
