Perez rides away from
the rest
Colombia's Marlon Alirio Pérez won the 6th edition of the Hornsby
to Swansea Cycle Classic that finished on the NSW central coast in the
small seaside town of Swansea. Perez finished solo in front of a small
group of chasers that included Caravello's Steve Williams (2nd) and
Central Coast rider, Phillip Thauax (3rd).
The 189 kilometre race was marked by strong winds that assisted the
riders as well as sunny conditions. The usual paring down of the bunch
occurred on the climbs up from the Hawksebury river and Mooney-Mooney
(twice), before the final selection was formed. Prominent riders at
the head of affairs included Pérez, Brent Dawson, Cadel Evans, Liam
Kelly, Nash Kent, Dave McC ann, David McPartland, Oscar Pineda, Klayten
Smith, Steve Williams, Kam Po Wong, Glen Stojanow, Phillip Thauax, and
Henk Vaassen.
However, after the main hills had been overcome, there were still a
couple of steep pinches to sap the energy from the survivors. It was
on one of these on the Hue Hue Road that Colombian Perez (who is out
here for the Olympics) made his move, simply riding away from the rest
to establish a one and a half minute lead by the finish. The remainder
broke up into smaller groups toward the end, and six riders were left
to contest the sprint for second. Williams was the quickest from Irish
Olympian David McCann, who was later relegated after chasing on behind
a team car. This gave promising young Central Coast rider, Phillip Thauax
third place. McCann had problems with his handlebars toward the end
of the race that necessitated a bike change, but illegally used his
car to draft back on.
