PreviewThis race substitutes the old Barcelona-Montpellier and is an important part of the build up for the U23 World Championships. Four foreign national teams participate as well as all the top Spanish amateur and espoirs teams and also a number of foreign amateur groups. The race is 520 kms long with no less than fourteen mountain passages, six of them category one. The Italian National Team, preparing for the World's, dominated the first stage of the Vuelta a Catalonia Porvenir with four riders in the decisive break of twelve on the last mountain of the day. 23 riders managed to get away on a fairly easy part of the stage.
